Hapless Toronto FC fall to MLS record-worst 0-8 as DC United wins in Canada

Toronto FC secured their solitary place in the MLS record books on Saturday, but for a distinction nobody would ever want.

TFC lost their eight straight match, an MLS record, as D.C. United went to BMO Field and posted a 2-0 victory. Chris Pontius and Hamdi Salihi delivered the goals for a D.C. side that maintained second place in the East with the win.

The match was scoreless until the 55th minute, when Pontius unleashed a left-footed blast to make it 1-0. Salihi scored in his second straight match with a skillful volley, coming on as a second-half sub and scoring just four minutes after coming on.

As if things couldn't get worse for TFC, they lost captain Torsten Frings to a shoulder injury that could keep him out of the decisive Canadian Championship second leg against Montreal on Wednesday. TFC and Montreal played to a scoreless draw in the first leg.

D.C. United goalkeeper Bill Hamid returned to the starting lineup for the first time since the season opener and reminded us why he's regarded as one of the best young goalkeepers in the American system by making four saves, including some stellar stops, to preserve the shutout.

Here are the match highlights:

What did you think of the match? Impressed with D.C. United's performance? Think TFC is as bad as their 0-8 record? Is it time for Aron Winter to be fired?

  1. It can get better. DC United has had very rough seasons in the past and have rebuilt. Same with the Galaxy. Not to mention the Crew, Dynamo, of Earthquakes.

Despite all the wind from a few blowhards, I do think that TFC fans are excellent fans just like Red Bulls fans for showing up and having fun and remembering that it’s a game. I hope your FO learns its lessons about personnel and continuity some day. I don’t pile on other teams having a bad year as I remember 2000-2003 and 2010.

  2. So true. Same in LA where the attendance for Saturday’s game was also inflated. Again, it’s TICKETS SOLD. RBNY gets all the grief but it’s the same across MLS, even up north in “Proper footy culture land!”

  3. The amazing thing to me is that with as fervent and loyal of a fanbase as TFC has, the organization itself can’t even put it together just one year to make a decent team that plays in the postseason. Since the fans are so loyal you’d think it would happen at least once if by accident.

Fire the coach, ditch the 433, get a coach with significant MLS experience, build up better talent playing a vanilla 442 or 451, and give the fans there a little payback. The early years have different explanations but the present problem is tactical cutesiness exacerbated by the formation making it hard to close out games where they do get a lead.

I’d ditch the coach now because you never know if the successor will be any good either so better to give them 20 or so games including Canadian contests to sink or swim than to pretend Winter and his 433 will ever pan out in this league, and leave yourself risking next season on the successor. This season is almost burnt already so use it to test the new coach.

There are some solid coaches out there to be had, Clarke, Rongen, etc. I think if they want to ensure playoffs it would need to be someone of the Arena/Bradley level, though, and they’re not sitting around often.

  4. People like to rag on RBNY for all the empty seats, but if there were 18,364 people at that game (the reported attendance), a few thousand of them must have been averting their eyes by loiterng at the concession stands.

  5. I only root for DC to lose their team. I just want to hear Toronto fans own up to be arrogant when they joined the league. That’s all.

Concersley, I wish KC nothing but the best!

  6. Not with these guys running the show. Next they’ll be bringing in Juan Carlos Osorio to fix things up. Maybe even Steve Sampson!
