The Colorado Rapids have taken another step to keep their core players together for the foreseeable future.

The Rapids re-signed striker Omar Cummings to a multi-year contract on Friday, extending the Jamaican forward's stay in Colorado. In his sixth season with the Rapids, Cummings has scored 36 goals and assisted on 26 others. Cummings, who drew interest from Aston Villa last winter, is currently out with an injured ankle but has three goals and an assist in 10 games this season. His most prolific year came in 2010, when his 14 goals helped lead the club to the MLS Cup. He was an MLS All-Star last season.

"Omar is one of the longest-serving members of our team, and has been a positive presence both on and off the field for years,” Rapids technical director Paul Bravo said in a team release. "His talent, speed and work rate have made him an All-Star and an MLS Cup winner, and we’re pleased to extend his contract."

Cummings marks the second Rapids star to sign a new deal with the club this season after Jeff Larentowicz was locked up to a multi-year deal earlier this season.
