SBI MLS Best XI (Week 9)

The Seattle Sounders are starting to look like the best team in Major League Soccer, and three of the team's top stars helped lead the Sounders to a two-win week as they climbed up the Western Conference standings.

Fredy Montero, Mauro Rosales and Osvaldo Alonso were all vital in Seattle's Week 9 victories against the LA Galaxy and Philadelphia Union, and all three earned spots on SBI's MLS Best XI.

The Sounders joined the New York Red Bulls as the only teams with multiple selections this week. Rookie goalkeeper Ryan Meara posted another outstanding game, while reserve defender Brandon Barklage was a surprise selection after his stellar work at right back for the Red Bulls vs. LA.

Barklage was one of three unsung defenders to make this week's Best XI. D.C. United's Daniel Woolard made the cut after completing 53 of 54 passes and playing well at centerback in United's win vs. Toronto FC (and scoring a goal in United's loss to San Jose last Wednesday). Josh Williams stepped in for Chad Marshall and helped Columbus shut out Portland.

Here are this week's selections for SBI MLS Best XI for Week Nine:

  1. Here’s why Alonso, 2012 tackles per game by MLSNET.

Player Club Games Played Tackles Tackles/Game
    Osvaldo Alonso SEA 8 52 6.50
    Brian Mullan COL 10 36 3.60
    Felipe Martins MTL 10 32 3.20
    Kyle Beckerman RSL 11 31 2.82
    Diego Chara POR 9 30 3.33

In 2011 it wasn’t this close, and Beckerman wasn’t close either.

  2. Just wait. Eddie Johnson is making his way back to relevance. He’s just getting fit and gaining chemistry with Rosales/Montero.

  3. I thought Brandon McDonald had more of a standout game than Woolard. Both played great, against a crappy TFC side though.

(SBI-McDonald also has a significantly worse game vs. San Jose than Woolard had.)
