SBI MLS Player of the Month: Alan Gordon

When the San Jose Earthquakes needed a late goal this past month, Alan Gordon came to the rescue. Not once, not twice, but three times. In a row.

Gordon's trio of consecutive late-game goals directly secured five points for the Earthquakes, and his heroics helped earn him SBI MLS Player of the Month honors, becoming the second Earthquake to win in as many months, following in the footsteps of Chris Wondolowski.

Gordon netted consecutive game-tying goals in the final moments against Chivas USA and Columbus to cement San Jose comebacks, but he saved his most clutch goal for the Galaxy, where he spent the first seven seasons of his career. His game-winner at the Home Depot Center capped a wild, late comeback from a 2-0 deficit and also earned him a place in the starting lineup in the Quakes' loss to Sporting Kansas City over the weekend. With four goals on the season, Gordon is one shy of his tying his career-high for a single campaign, which he set last season with Toronto FC and San Jose and in 2008 with the Galaxy.

Gordon's clutch performances helped him beat out the likes of more prolific players like D.C. United's Dwayne De Rosario and Seattle's Fredy Montero, who each had some spectacular strikes en route to four goals and three assists; United's Hamdi Salihi, who scored four goals and has started to find his groove; New York's Kenny Cooper, who scored a goal in each of the Red Bulls' last four matches; and Colorado Rapids midfielder Martin Rivero, who had a goal and three assists.

What did you think of Gordon's late-game heroics? Which MLS player do you think was the best in May?

Not a big Jose fan, or really Gordan either, but I would agree with this.

One of the best photos in MLS history.
It would make a great league logo, except that Alan Gordon is not quite Jerry West… maybe if it had been Landon or DeRo…

thank god for that… he’s stepped up when we needed him most and given us another legitimate scoring threat off the bench. and now with Bernardez almost back, hopefully the Quakes get back on track posting clean sheets and Wondo scoring goals.

Wait, I haven’t followed MLS as closely over the past 2-3 years…this is the same Alan Gordon who used to play for the Galaxy? The one who was quite possibly the worst forward in the league, even with service from Beckham and Donovan? Wow, respect to the man for improving his game.
