SBI MLS Player of the Week: Lee Nguyen

Lee Nguyen certainly looked like a man playing with extra motivation Saturday night.

Nguyen torched the Vancouver Whitecaps, the team that cut him in the preseason after winning a player lottery for his services, by scoring two goals and assisting on another in the New England Revolution's 4-1 victory to earn SBI MLS Player of the Week honors.

Nguyen cancelled out Eric Hassli's early opening goal a minute after the Frenchman had put the Whitecaps out front, finishing from inside the box after a failed clearance. Nguyen then set up Saer Sene for the eventual game-winning goal before capping off his performance with a tremendous volley from distance off a throw-in. The goals were Nguyen's first two in MLS and helped deliver the Revs their fourth win, which is just one fewer than the five wins they mustered in 2011.

Nguyen beat out the likes of New York's Kenny Cooper, who had two game-winning goals in Week 10; Houston's Brad Davis, whose long-range strike gave the Dynamo a win in the BBVA Compass Stadium opener; and Real Salt Lake's Jamison Olave, who was a vital part of two RSL shutouts and silenced in-form Seattle striker Fredy Montero in RSL's big road win.

What did you think of Nguyen's performance? Which player did you think stood out the most in Week 10?

  1. I for one have been very optimistic about Lee’s potential. But it is very hard to make it as a pro. Here’s hoping for more great stuff from Lee.

  2. I’m thinking his coach needs to tell him he’s playing Vancouver every week…

Seriously though, great performance from a guy who was nearly eaten up by the “here-today-gone-today” hype machine that is analyzing USMNT prospects. Hope he puts together a strong season and become another quality player.

  3. Well deserved. Hope his good play continues. I hope to see a few of his games in Boston once I am freed from the purgatory of Atlanta in another month or so

  4. Perhaps they didn’t realize when they told him to empty his locker that he’d do it into their net, repeatedly.

  5. Good for him.

Hilarious that he earned POTW honors by stomping the team that dropped him for allegedly not being good enough to make their roster.
