SBI MLS Rookie of the Month: Nick DeLeon

Ever since Nick DeLeon got his chance to play regularly for D.C. United, he has played more like a seasoned veteran than a first-year pro, adding a hard-working, prolific dynamic to the left wing, and the effect has been felt on the club that currently boasts the longest unbeaten streak in the league.

DeLeon has continued to carry his early-season momentum through into the campaign's second month, playing every minute D.C.'s five April games, scoring a goal and adding two assists while fortifying his place in Ben Olsen's lineup to win SBI MLS Rookie of the Month honors.

DeLeon beat out SBI's March Rookie of the Month, Colorado's Tony Cascio; New York Red Bulls goalkeeper Ryan Meara, who is coming off his best game as a pro; and Philadelphia Union fullback Raymon Gaddis, who was pressed into action and has held his own, for the monthly honors.

Have you been impressed with DeLeon's rookie campaign? Think he can keep up his current pace? Which rookie do you think had the best April?

  1. My dad used to take me to SJ Earthquakes games in the 70’s and I enjoyed watching Nick’s father Leroy play for them. Tomorrow night I’ll be taking my seven year old son to the the Earthquakes game and we look forward to seeing Nick play. Nick is a great story and a fine example of what makes the MLS a lot of fun to watch.

We will be rooting for SJ to win – Go Quakes!
