For the second straight week, Ryan Meara helped lead a short-handed New York Red Bulls defense to a shutout, and for the second straight week he was the clear-cut choice as the top rookie in Major League Soccer.
Meara managed to turn in an even better performance against the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday than the stellar showing he had against New England a week earlier, keeping the Galaxy's high-powered offense off the board in a 1-0 victory at Home Depot Center. Meara's showing made him the clear-cut choice as SBI MLS Rookie of the Week.
Meara beat out a field that included Chicago's Austin Berry, Philadelphia's Ray Gaddis and Colorado's Tony Cascio for this week's honor.
What did you think of Meara's performance? Impressed with his command in goal as a rookie? Was there another rookie who impressed you more in MLS this past weekend?

gross dude. that sh*ts going to EXPLODE in a couple of years and you’d be left with a ginger resembling a truck.
Yeah, that’s how advertising works.
I think you’re thinking of Johnson. Hamid got injured in the El Salvador game, Johnson was the one with the BIG miss. Still a lot of potential for both.
Meara played a great game. Maybe this Backe guy knows a little something after all.
I’ll admit I haven’t seen Hamid play many games but after watching him blunder our chances of qualifying for the Olympics my hope for him has cooled off drastically.
I don’t really care which country Meara chooses, I just hope that Hans and Redbull don’t stand in his way. Agudelo and Ream were let go to do what they wanted for the USMNT, so why is Meara’s case much different?
While I didn’t see the other performances, Meara looked fantastic and made some excellent saves while also making all the rights moves in terms of coming off his line. Sometimes it’s hard to remember he’s a rookie based on how calm and cool he is out there. The kid has a bright future…
This is a terrible thing to say about someone. Even Larry Bird.
Meara made incredible save after incredible save against the Galaxy. The kid is making my jaw drop.
Well I would consider proposing someone else this week but since he “was the clear-cut choice”…
Ireland has a great future keeper. I KIIIIIIID! No shoot, Meara has been the best story of the year for RBNY in a pretty up and down season so far. Local kid who went to school in the city…and one year later leading NYC’s pro soccer team to victories?? I seriously hope that U-23 call up by Ireland that got denied was a wake up call to the USMNT program and that they reach out to him soon. I’m not saying he’s better than Hamid, Johnson or even MacMath, but we shouldn’t let him get away!
FORDHAM AND SOUTH SOUTH BRONX STAND UP!!
I hope DeLeon isn’t cooling off…
Oh… and Meara played a good game.
Wow! I really love the model in the snorg tee’s advertisements.
I’m impressed by how much Meara looks like Larry Bird.
