This Weekend’s Soccer on TV

Whether you want to see relegation-threatened teams fight for survival or clubs attempting to win a title, this weekend should have just what you're looking for and then some.

There are several quality games to watch, starting with the FA Cup final between Chelsea and Liverpool on Saturday afternoon. The two English clubs will be battling to salvage some pride after enduring disappointing campaigns, and both need to appease foaming-at-the-mouth fans.

Then there's the matches with relegation implications, including Bolton Wanderers' game against West Bromwich Albion. Tim Ream is sure to start for Bolton in a match the club needs a result in if they have any hope of avoiding the drop.

In MLS, this weekend brings us the only meeting of the regular season between the Los Angeles Galaxy and the New York Red Bulls. The star-studded yet disappointing Galaxy will aim to bounce back from Wednesday's defeat to the Seattle Sounders versus a visiting Red Bulls side that is going to get a taste of just how well they can cope without the injured Thierry Henry.

  1. +1 I have commented on this theme several times. I think the DP is a flawed business model. 1) No one can convince me that paying aging ex stars millions like Rafa Marquez actually increase MLS revenue. I will not believe this until someone can cite a scientifically based study that confirms this. 2) Likewise, I am skeptical that bringing in the old stars increases the quality of MLS soccer. Actually, probably even reduces the quality for various reasons. 3) By wasting millions on old f&rts, you have to cut wages for a lot of grunts to levels that do little to encourage young athletes to choose soccer, not mention that the highly paid DPs probably is not good for the morale of the guys on the team sweating their butts off and making in the mid 5-figures.

I truly believe more fans would buy tickets to see guys like Tim Chandler or Fabian Johnson or Michael Bradley than guys like Torsten Frings or Thierry Henry or even David Beckham. Why not use that money to bring in younger talent. MLS needs to seriously rethink the business model. They are are stuck in a we’ve-always-done-it-that-way rut.

  2. The Chivas USA-Chicago match was a one-time Friday night special for ESPN Deportes only. Exclusive presentation in Spanish. No English-language broadcast. No local broadcast.

The agreement between ESPN, Inc. and SUM allows ESPN Deportes to have 1 exclusive Spanish-language broadcast each season.

  3. It’s a shame Red Bull has so many players out. They should have scheduled this after the break when reinforcements arrive for both clubs. They are still the most exciting teams in the States.

  4. Um, you’re sort of right, but it doesn’t make sense to say that after 8 games, the Galaxy show that DPs are useless, especially since they won the freaking trophy last year. Post again when the Galaxy has been terrible for two consecutive years.

  5. LA will be defeated again. So much for the over hyped star studded aged players who can’t produce wins. I think this is a wake up for MLS to rely more on youth academy development within MLS and young overseas talent pool for results. The clock has ticked and it’s now time to bring in the technical skills from the youth.

  6. Correct kickoff time is 12:15pm Eastern.

FOX Soccer has a bloated pre-game show starting at 11:30am Eastern. Too many talking heads as usual.

Franco left out the other 3 Mexican League quarterfinals. Saturday 9pm ET on UDN, Sunday 7pm ET on UDN, Sunday 9pm ET on Azteca America.
