Report: Three Guatemala regulars under CCL match-fixing investigation

When the U.S. men's national team takes on Guatemala in a World Cup qualifier on June 12, the hosts are poised to be without three potential starters.

Gustavo Cabrera, Yony Flores and former Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder Guillermo "Pando" Ramirez have reportedly been pulled from Guatemala's national team for being part of a match-fixing investigation that stems from a CONCACAF Champions League match between Santos Laguna and Municipal in October, 2010. The match, in which all three played 90 minutes for Municipal, ended 6-1 in Santos Laguna's favor.

The investigation into match-fixing emerges at the same time as one on a greater scale in Italy in which high-profile Italian internationals have been arrested and investigated during the on-going probe.

  1. Don’t believe anything in big soccer forums. The FMF did not change the rules. Santos qualifed to CCL twice by being runner ups and champions during the previous two tournaments. So the runner up spot went to the team with most points during that season. Had Monterrey won, Santos would have kept their runner up spot and given up their second runner up spot to America. These rules where known by all before these tournaments started.

America is not going to CCL.

Again, don’t trust Big Soccer forums, its full of kids with no idea of what thay are toalking about.

  2. you know, on big soccer there’s a discussion about how FMF seemed to have changed the rule so that Chivas made CCL. I wonder if this is part of that. I mean, FMF intending to release dirt on the opponent of Santos L so that “just to be on the safe side” they too recuse themselves from this year’s CCL, hence vacating that spot to Club America. However, Club America will not be into the group pot w/mls & fmf teams, but in the one where Municipal was. What this all means is dont be surprised if LA, Chivas & Club America all end up in the same group w/100k expected at the rose bowl for those two games, and, in return, a greater schedule in the US for EL Tri…maybe even a bigger cut of profits made off of those games.

  3. No suggestion that Santos participated in the match-fixing, if it in fact occurred. Nevertheless, I’m happy that Herculez Gomez didn’t transfer to Santos until 2011. That kind of distraction is the last thing the USMNT needs (see Italy).

  4. I give it a week or two before we discover that Central American officials have been fixing CCL games.

I mean we already know its true.
