The U.S. men's national team is currently preparing for friendlies and World Cup qualifiers, but the future of the program is also in action this week. The U.S. Under-18 men's national team kicks off its participation in the Libson International Tournament on Wednesday, the first tournament for new coach Javier Perez.

The U-18s will face U-19 sides from Poland on Wednesday, Slovakia on Thursday and host Portugal on Saturday. Among the players on Perez' 20-man roster are three MLS Homegrown Players (LA's Jack McBean, Chivas USA's Marco Delgado and Philadelphia's Zach Pfeffer), 2011 U-17 World Cup standouts Mobi Fehr, Alejandro Guido and Esteban Rodriguez and 2011 CONCACAF U-17 championship golden boot winner Andrew Oliver.

"It’s going to be a very challenging tournament for us, not only for the age group but also because every team in Europe is extremely competitive," Perez said on U.S. Soccer's website.

The U-18s drew a youth team from Sporting Lisbon 1-1 on Sunday in a tune-up for the match, with Guido scoring from the penalty spot to account for the Americans' goal.

The roster for the tournament is after the jump:

  1. He’s only residing in Germany. He grew up in PA, I think, and his dad works for the German software company SAP. (Name is actually spelled “Canouse”).

  2. +1 – I enjoy watching the young guys in MLS emerge (Gaddis, Meara, Gil, Correa, etc.) but YNT stuff, no thanks for now.

  3. He is with the U-17s at Bradenton FL. You can see him in the ussoccer video where the U-17s visit USMNT camp in Orlando. There are some very promising guys on this U-18 team, but the current U-17 team is looking even better than the last one did, lots of players who could develop into something special, including of course Junior Flores.

  4. Poor peformances? That was an epic Hindenburg crash and burn. Twice. No thanks. I will follow the WCQ. Have fun with the youth teams if that is your thing but I am out.

  5. Say Wha!!??!1

Some of these U18s were on the squad that went to the last U17 WC.

The new crop of U17s are tearing it up!

Despite the poor U23 performance, there are a few diamons in the rough that have been salvaged (Corona, Boyd, Morales) and more that will definitely play a part in the future (Diskerud, Gatt, Hamid, Shea).

    C’mon now.

  6. Good to see Andrew Oliver back in the U.S. youth set-up. This kid has a bright future as either a second striker/winger or CAM.

  7. Was Kellyn Acosta the 15 year old kid who played right back in the U-17 Concacaf tourney last year?? I remember being impressed with him, considering he was the youngest one out there.
