Salgado sparks Whitecaps, TFC draw Impact in Canadian championship

Martin Rennie may have found something in using Omar Salgado on the left wing.

Salgado had a hand in goals scored by Eric Hassli and Atiba Harris, as the Whitecaps cruised by FC Edmonton 2-0 in the first leg of their Canadian championship semifinal tie Wednesday night. Salgado cut down the left side and got to the end line before playing a ball back to Hassli at the top of the box for the opening goal, and his chip hit off the post and right to Harris for the second.

Rennie trotted out a reserve-heavy lineup, leaving Jay DeMerit, Camilo, Young-Pyo Lee, Sebastien Le Toux and Joe Cannon out of the starting XI. Le Toux and Cannon were on the bench, but were not needed, as the Whitecaps scored twice before halftime to to seize control.

Toronto FC and Montreal played to a scoreless draw at Olympic Stadium in the first leg of the other semifinal. The closest either side came to score was in the first half when Montreal's Shavar Thomas had his header cleared off the line by Reggie Lambe. Both second legs will be played next Wednesday.

Highlights from both matches are after the jump:

If TFC becomes the Championships of Canada this year that might not be the best thing to happen to Canadian soccer. Just saying eh.

  • Rees

Very nice work by Salgado on the second goal – Hassli should have given him a ball to hit first time, but put it behind him. I love the far post chip though – would’ve been a fantastic goal had it gone in.

  • Andy

The announcer acts like that was a cross on the second one, but it really looked like a chip to me.

  • Air Jordanz

They have no chance against Vancouver.

It will be Vancouver over Montreal in the final round. Mark it.
