Jonathan Bornstein's move to Tigres UANL has not panned out as he would have hoped, but he'll get a second chance to prove his worth in the Mexican Primera with another club.

Bornstein has been loaned by Tigres UANL to Atlante, where he'll eye the playing time that he never consistently received with the 2011-12 Mexican apertura champions.

At Tigres, Bornstein, who was shifted from left back to a midfield role, played sparingly, appearing in just seven league matches and two Copa Libertadores matches after leaving Chivas USA following the 2010 MLS season. While the move offers Bornstein a new lease on his playing life, it also prevents him from potentially participating in the CONCACAF Champions League. Tigres were placed into Group 6 for the upcoming tournament with Alajuelense and Real Esteli in Tuesday's draw.

What do you think of the move?

  1. Economics. Would you rather make $300k – $500+ k a year in Mexico or $150k in MLS? It would take 6 yrs of MLS pay for it to reach what he has been paid during his stay in Mexico.

Tell me you would still choose MLS with this in context.

  2. Why doesn’t this knucklehead just come back to MLS? I think Portland still has his rights, and that’s a team where he could make a serious contribution.

  3. you have to remember that cancun is a nice place to visit, but playing in 90+degree with 100% humidity is not as fun as one would imagine.

  4. Hmmm… Must be why Sunderland was once interested in him. Also would explain his occasional good performances in 2009. You forget that at one poit he was by far our best option at left back.

  5. -It’s not sad. Seriously, not in the least.
-In order to redeem ones self, you must be capable of said redemption.
-The fair amount of blame was put on him, as he was the blatant weak link that was exploited.
-It’s not the responsibility of the back line to constantly cover for this achilles heal.

  6. Good spot for him – Atlante’s defense was horrible last season, so if he can help them get any better, then he might be able to stick.

Never understood why he got so much hate – Left-backs suck almost everywhere in the world. At least JB had some wheels down the left flank, and scored that awesome goal against Costa Rica that qualified the Catrachos (our closest ally in CONCACAF).

  7. I felt pretty bad about Johnny Bornstein. He was clearly no world-beater and, for the most part, out of his element in South Africa, but I remember him being a pretty strong player against a lot of Concacaf opposition. No, he wasn’t going to turn into a Fabian Johnson, but it’s not his fault that he was ill-deployed by Bradley against teams way out of his league.

I wish him the best and I hope he gets time and makes an impact in the FMF. I’m in no rush to see him back on the USMNT radar, but I definitely hope he improves and does well down in Cancun.

  8. Good for him. With the emergence of Fabian Johnson, Klinsmann’s man-crush on Castillo, Lihaj establishing himself in the Prem and whatever happens with Timmy Chandler, it’s pretty safe to say Bornstein’s USMNT chances are looking pretty bleak. At this point, it should just be about him continuing to play, improving as much as he can and making the most of his professional career. Hopefully this move gets him more PT, but realistically he’ll be making great money, training everyday and living in Cancun. That doesn’t suck.

  9. He had to compete with Jorge Torres Nilo at left back and then Carlos Salcido (when he returned from Fulham) at defensive midfield (left), so it was understandable he was not going to beat them for those spots. Both players are starters for El Tri.

Johnny B has better chances with Atlante.

  10. It’s sad that he hasn’t had the chance to redeem himself since the infamous Gold Cup Massacre. Too much blame was put on Bornstein – the whole team just fell apart.

  11. He’ll be making good money living in Cancun – not the worst life in the world. Even though he’s the personification of persona non grata in American soccer.

  12. I believe he will get more playing time, Atlante is a mid table team and Tigres is always playing for the top spots, I don´t like Lavolpe though.
