The Los Angeles Galaxy have sorely been needing a confidence-building victory to help turn around their dismal season, and they may just have gotten it.

The Galaxy picked up a surprise 3-2 road win over Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium on Wednesday, rallying from an early 2-0 deficit to give RSL its first league loss in club history after being up by two. Galaxy captain Landon Donovan led the way in the comeback with a two-goal performance that included the winner while Mike Magee added one of his own.

Donovan's decisive finish came in the second half after a pinpoint pass from Magee found him streaking behind Real Salt Lake's back line, which had two costly turnovers to allow the Galaxy to pull level after early strikes from Kyle Beckerman and Alvaro Saborio.

Tony Beltran had the first gaffe, hitting a poor backpass to Nick Rimando that Donovan intercepted and knocked home. The other hiccup came early in the second half when Jamison Olave let a ball roll away to Magee, who slotted the equalizer off the far post and into the back of the net.

The victory, the Galaxy's second in a row, moved Los Angeles to within two points of the Colorado Rapids for the fifth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

What do you think of the Galaxy's 3-2 win over RSL? Is this Los Angeles' turning point? Still wondering how Real Salt Lake blew a 2-0 lead?

  1. Mark Rogondino are Cobi Jones get the job alright. I actually like Rogondino. Cobi needs to pep up his color commentary. Both are head and shoulders better than Dunseth.

  2. That was an embarrassing loss to LA. The first two LA goals were gifts from the RSL defense, and the third wasn’t much better. Donovan is King of taking advantage of mistakes, and Magee is a scrappy player that does well with his chances and seems to always make us pay. I just wish that the fire and skill RSL showed would have carried past the first 25 minutes. Demoralizing.

  3. Wish there would be a post on who are the worst local announcers for MLS. LA’s aren’t great, but those two jokers were terrible for RSL.

Ives, run a best and worst of local announcers.

  4. Patrick Ianni scoring a spectacular world class goal, the Galaxy beating RSL at Rio Tinto, Donovan actually scoring two goals for the Galaxy? Is there a full moon or something?

  5. LA played winning soccer by not slowing down the game waiting for a (necessarily) static Buddle or a(n unnecessarily) static Keane to knock in crosses from Donovan & Beckham. It was with speed, precision passing, opportunistic counters & a cohesive defense.

I hope when Keane & later Buddle return, Arena keeps them pushing the tempo rather than slow, plodding, English/Scottish soccer.
