Henry, Marquez out for Red Bulls' next two games

The New York Red Bulls have grown accustomed to playing without their biggest names this season, and it appears that they'll have to do so again when they resume play after the international break.

Coach Hans Backe told reporters that Designated Players Thierry Henry and Rafa Marquez will sit out the club's two-game road trip to Chicago and Vancouver. Henry is dealing with a calf strain that he reportedly suffered while training during the break, while Marquez was hurt on international duty with Mexico.

Backe's hope is that they are fit to return for the June 24 match at Red Bull Arena against D.C. United, one that will have big implications atop the Eastern Conference standings. The two are currently 1-2 in the standings, with D.C. leading New York by a point. The Red Bulls, however, have two games in hand and have started to find their identity with Henry and Marquez out during the course of the season with other ailments and suspensions.

Fantastic, plenty of time for Henry to count his money and then help Rafa learn how to count his. Yay.

Doin fine without em. Hope coach and staff make note of how useless the Dp’s are and how great our sole draft pick is doing!

‘What do you think of this development?’

Suspicious of the NYRB press release.

Eh, Henry is probably a bigger loss but the team can still produce without them (especially Marquez).

  • Brain Guy

Does anyone know how many of RBNY’s games Henry has played, and how many he has missed, since coming to the club? He seems to get injured in training as often as he does in matches.

I thought Marquez was on loan to the Mexican national team? Did they opt to not buy? Nuts!

  • Bart

just think of how NY Red Bull could have used that 5.6 million towards youth development instead of Marquez.

thats what USNT needs. More MLS teams contributing to the pool instead of playing over the hill foreigners millions.
