Holgersson out for D.C. United showdown

New York Red Bulls centerback Markus Holgersson will miss Sunday's match against D.C. United with a left ankle sprain, Red Bulls head coach Hans Backe revealed on Saturday.

Holgersson suffered the injury late in the Red Bulls' 1-1 draw vs. Vancouver on Wednesday. His absence will likely mean a Red Bulls centerback tandem of Wilman Conde and Heath Pearce, though Conde is dealing with what Backe is calling muscle tightness. If Conde were unable to play on Sunday, the Red Bulls would have to turn to Stephen Keel.

Holgersson's absence might be a blessing in disguise considering how awful he was against D.C. United the last time these teams met. He was beaten badly on two goals in D.C. United's 4-1 thrashing of the Red Bulls on April 22nd, but Holgersson has improved since that shocking outing and has been a more consistent presence in central defense for the Red Bulls.

What do you think of this development? Looking forward to seeing the Conde-Pearce centerback tandem? Do you see the Red Bulls beating D.C. United?

  2. good. anyone who pays attention to ny’s backline will see holgersson’s weaknesses. i.e. pressure him and he’s likely to make some awkward backpass to meara ( see last week – see almost every week ) we cleaned up the last one but that’s only the one on top of my list of awkward holgersonisms

look forward to seeing keel after conde cramps up in the 56th minute.
conde is a great defender when he’s on the field but the problem the balance of keeping him on the field long enough not to cause us probs in the back.
kind of like me and milk…but i’ve said too much

  3. Outside of a couple of games, I haven’t been that impressed with Holgersson. I hope Conde can stay healthy and would find out if he is better paired with Keel and Pearce as a left back or with Pearce and have Miller as a left back.
