MLS Ticker: Gaddis suspended, Tan traded to D.C., and more

When the Philadelphia Union take to the field at BBVA Compass Stadium this weekend, one player who will not be in uniform is Raymon Gaddis.

The Union rookie defender was suspended for one game and fined an undisclosed amount by the MLS Disciplinary Committee on Thursday for his tackle on Sporting Kansas City midfielder Roger Espinoza this past weekend. The incident occurred in the 24th minute of Philadelphia's 4-0 victory on June 23, as Gaddis came in late on Espinoza. Gaddis was given a yellow card for the foul.

With Gaddis suspended and incumbent Sheanon Williams likely still out for the match with Houston due to a toe injury, Union head coach John Hackworth will now have a decision to make as to who he should start at right back.

Here is Gaddis' foul and more notes from around MLS:

EARTHQUAKES WAIVE TWO PLAYERS

The San Jose Earthquakes said goodbye to a pair of players on Thursday, waiving midfielder Ellis McLoughlin and defender Josh Suggs. Neither player made much of an impact during their time with the club. McLoughlin scored one goal in 10 appearances as a substitute for the Earthquakes, while Suggs started four Reserve League matches this season.

WHITECAPS TRADE TAN TO D.C. UNITED, WAIVE FRANKS

The Vancouver Whitecaps made a pair of roster moves Thursday, as they traded striker Long Tan to D.C. United and waived midfielder Floyd Franks. As part of the deal with United, Vancouver acquired another third-round selection in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft. Tan made four appearances for the Whitecaps this year, while Franks made two regular season cameos off the bench.

BURGOS RELEASED BY TORONTO FC

Efrain Burgos Jr.'s time with Toronto FC has come to an end. The second-year midfielder was waived by Toronto on Thursday, ending a stint with the club that begin in late March. The 23-year-old made just two appearances for last-place Toronto FC this season.

RAPIDS CUT THREE

Quincy Amarikwa, Ross LaBeux and former first-round draft pick Eddie Ababio were all released by the Colorado Rapids on Thursday.

  1. But injuries do happen. Even if he never quite makes the rotation, he’ll at least be playing rather than being waved.

  2. didnt get to see much of Ellis this year- he’s got some pace and an absolute cannon of a shot though. nice fellow.
what i saw of Suggs was a big, strong, and committed defender, just a little slow on the ball. saw that coming when the Quakes picked up Zayner. we’ll cut Tim Ward and Joey Gjertsen just as soon as their ‘healthy’ enough, and hopefully pick up some more depth at winger and outside back.

  3. Agreed it should have been a red, but not so sure it would ave changed the end result other than goal differential. KC looked sluggish all night.

  4. The Tan deal is a modest win-win for both teams. DCU gets an athletic, young player with potential who costs next to nothing and they gave up next to nothing (3rd round pick?). Vancouver frees up room on their roster b/c they want to acquire players. So they get something (3rd round pick) for a player they otherwise would have had to cut.

  5. Yeah, that’s probably why it wasn’t a straight red on the spot. Espinoza has a bit of a reputation that he re-earned over and over again in that game alone.

That said, the disciplinary committee got this one right. It was incredibly stupid of Gaddis.

Side note of no concern…that must have been the slowest foul/fall I’ve ever seen in MLS. It had a Matrix feel to it. Glad nobody got hurt.

  6. Oh lord I hope so. I remember seeing Arena giggling like a star struck kid shaking his hand after a friendly. I think Bruce would love him in LA (so would I).

  7. Amerikwa was a “lightning in a bottle” player. Hope he finds a new home soon, new coach did not care for his game tho..La Baux was terrible and Ababio so-so.

  8. The Gaddis suspension is further evidence that Terry Vaughn isn’t doing his job. Again, he is terribly inconsistent. That was a straight red situation.

  9. There’s a suspension for a dangerous tackling involving Espinoza and he’s the victim and not the perpetrator? Feels like bizarro world.
