  1. That goal would have been spectacular as a free kick. Doing it after 91) beating his defender at midfield, (2) streaking 50+ yards at top speed, (3) deftly changing direction, (3) taking a touch to give himself some space, (4) taking a second touch to give himself the little bit of extra space he needed, and (5) recognizing where the goal and the ‘keeper were — it’s simply unbelievable. That central defender must have been panicking when he saw Messi racing at him unmarked and with options.

  2. Well, Messi’s goals came by beating center backs with no international experience, and the second should have been called offsides (Messi wasn’t off, but a player next to the through ball was) and he wasn’t involved much else…oh, forget it. He was obscene. Tom Brady would have had a hard time passing that last goal in on the run with that kind of accuracy.

  3. You’re right. Neymar is better. At being able to fit his head into a pencil sharpener. At football, not so much.

  4. And Marcelo was given a red at the end after getting into it with another player (who also got red). It was an idiotic way to end an great match.

  5. To be fair, Ronaldo’s teammates leave quite a lot to be desired…

I think I didn’t notice the hair change because he had so few touches he was hardly featured on screen. 😉

  6. If the US can’t win the World Cu in 2014 (and they won’t), then I hope Messi and Argentine bring it home. The people that dismiss his as not possibly being the best ever solely because he has never hoisted the WC trophy are simply unwilling to accept his greatness. Glad Messi could remind up today

  7. That’s what happens when you’re not in a bunker against his team. If your lines aren’t close together and he has space to run at you, there are no good options. Rush out when he already has the ball under control and he will treat you like the orange traffic cone.

  8. That was stunning. It’s amazing how far back the Brazilian defense backed off him as he was running in too. Gave him *acres* of space to pick his corner.

  9. I agree that Messi has to move to the PL to prove he is the best, Ronaldo is done there and now in La Liga. He will move to Seria A eventually.

  10. I recall watching Argentina play Germany in the knockout round South Africa, and the Germans beating them 4-0. Messi certainly wasn’t the best player on the field that day. They’re both great, but your logic in dissing Cristiano for ONE GAME is pretty silly.

  11. Oy – Messi all day. Ronaldo gets a shout, but repeatedly isn’t an int’l performer – Rooney stomp excluded.

  12. how life works…..Marcelo takes LD’s lunch money and today he “pays” with it his respects to the great Messi.

  13. haha. I watched both games. There is really no comparison. Cristiano wasn’t even the best player on the field against Germany much less better than Messi.

  14. I think Ronaldo is better than Messi. Sure, Messi scores a few more goals than Ronaldo, but look at their teammates. This season Messi was the only Barca player in the top ten goalscorers in La Liga. Real, meanwhile, had three of the top five. Messi scores slightly more goals, but that’s because he’s the only player on his team that does score. Ronaldo has won league titles in the two best leagues in the world, has won Champions League, World Player of the Year, and all of the other individual accolades out there. Neither has accomplished much at the international level, though CR was named to the team of the tournament at Euro 2004.

Look, Messi is great. To repeat, he is a great, great player. I’m not criticizing Messi at all. It’s just tiring seeing people around here knock CR because they don’t like him personally. They are clearly 1A and 1B as far as the best players in the world, so I don’t understand why so many of you make it seem like we’re comparing Joe Montana to Ryan Leaf.

  15. It’s fitting that on the same day Ronaldo has the fewest touches for a field player on his team when he is needed the most, Lionel Messi drops a hat trick on Brazil with a stunning golazo.

Also, according to Toumba he also changed his hairstyle at half time? Don’t know what to say to that other than it’s not really a question who the best is.

  16. Messi scored 3 goals against Brazil today…..Ronaldo had two different hairstyles against Germany today (seriously..he changed hairstyles at halftime)

That should tell you all you need to know about who really is the best player in the world.
