U.S. Soccer fans might not have a whole lot to root for at this summer's Olympic tournament, but MLS fans will most certainly have a rooting interest.

D.C. United winger Andy Najar and Sporting Kansas City midfielder Roger Espinoza were among those named to Honduras' Olympic roster on Thursday, with Espinoza occupying one of the team's three overage places. Jerry Bengston and Maynor Figueroa are the others.

For Najar, it represents his biggest chance on the international stage after playing for Honduras' senior team in a pair of friendlies. He also played a large role in Honduras' qualifying campaign this past spring, starting three of Honduras' five games and coming on as a substitute in the CONCACAF qualifying final against Mexico. He will join Honduras for preparations on July 2, according to a D.C. United release.

Honduras was drawn into a tough Group D, with games against Morocco, Spain and Japan on the docket in the United Kingdom. Los Catrachos open the tournament against Morocco on July 26 at Glasgow's Hampden Park.

What do you think of this development? Will you be rooting for Honduras at the Olympics? Think Los Catrachos have a shot at reaching the medal rounds?

  2. Najar is a great young player. Hasn’t really had the opportunity to prove himself in our squad yet so I look forward to seeing what he can do.

    Go Honduras!

  3. Good for Najar.

I like the kid and while I would have loved for him to be in our pool, I’m still happy to see an up and coming MLS’er get his shot.
