The Vancouver Whitecaps looked like they had three points in the bag when Martin Bonjour buried a second-half goal against the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday night, but New York's newest player picked a perfect time to deliver his first goal for his new club.

Heath Pearce scored a clutch equalizer in the 86th-minute to help the Red Bulls salvage a 1-1 draw at BC Place.

The match was a back-and-forth affair as the Red Bulls came into the match without the Designated Player tandem of Thierry Henry and Rafa Marquez, but that didn't stop the visitors from giving Vancouver a good challenge. Ryan Meara helped keep the Whitecaps off the board for much of the match until Bonjour finally broke through in the 75th minute and slotted home a cross from Davide Chiumiento that snuck by two other teammates before finding the Whitecaps defender for his first goal of the season.

The Red Bulls needed just 11 minutes to respond and equalized when Pearce rose up unmarked to head home a Joel Lindpere cross to make the score 1-1.

  1. Yeah, I stopped on that expression too. Sometimes sports writers just string together a group of serviceable cliches. “Slotted home a cross” is F10; “found the back of the net” is Alt-F2.

  2. “[S]lotted home a cross” ? That makes it sounds like a direct deflection off the cross. Bonjour actually settled the ball and beat Meara in the upper 90. Nobody stepped up to contest him.

A good result, all things considered.

  3. Fairly entertaining game, though coming off the garbage over the weekend from the Chicago game, anything would have been better than that. I will say that it’s amazing how many ways Camilo fluffed chances in that game.

  4. Last year he missed a game for a tumor removal and it was sited as “personal reasons.” If it wasn’t something important do you really think they would let the coach skip a game?!

  5. Where the F was our coach? I don’t care about “personal reasons”. Would an NFL coach ever miss a game? No. If he’s not on his death bed he needs to be fired.
