Philadelphia Union vs. D.C. United: Match Night Commentary

Philadelphia Union Logo  D.C. United Logo

The Philadelphia Union begin life after Peter Nowak tonight as they take on arch-rival D.C. United in their first match under interim head coach John Hackworth.

The Union parted ways with Nowak on Wednesday, saying goodbye to the only head coach they ever had. Now the task is up to Hackworth to turn around a disappointing start to the season by molding a young squad into the winning team expected when the season began.

It won't be easy tonight against a strong D.C. United side currently in first place in the Eastern Conference. The recent long MLS break should help D.C. come out strong as Ben Olsen fields a full-strength squad for the first time in more than a month.

  1. Pontius doesn’t have a rep as a diver. He was asked after the game and he said that the defender did get a piece of him, that it wasn’t a dive, he wasn’t sure but he thought the defender might have gotten ball. So I still don’t see how that’s a ridiculous decision. At best you have a soft call. But if Philly does a reasonable job marking up on the free kick, there’s no goal.

  2. “Ridiculous decision”? In what way? Pontius was onside–not even close in this case. If you watched the game on TV the Philly announcers were confused and implied that there had been either an offside or foul call (i.e.: AR’s flag went up) except that no flag went up. For this particular score, Pontius’ man simply stopped running with him which allowed Pontius the opportunity to tap in the ball at the far post. Not exactly a contender for GOTW but it’s a completely legitimate goal.
