Rookie Rowe sparks Revs to win over Fire

The New England Revolution and Chicago Fire looked destined to play to a scoreless draw in Major League Soccer's only match on Saturday, but Revs rookie Kelyn Rowe came on in the second half and gave the home side a sorely-needed spark at Gillette Stadium.

The UCLA product scored the opening goal in the 69th minute, then set up a 73rd-minute insurange goal from Benny Feilhaber to help lift New England to a 2-0 victory on Saturday night.

Feilhaber enjoyed his best game of the season, setting up Rowe's goal before slotting home his own tally, giving the U.S. national team pool player his first goal and assist of the 2012 season.

The performance was a lethargic one from a Fire attack that simply couldn't produce quality chances. Gonzalo Segares hit the woodwork in the first half, and Dominic Oduro hit the post early in the second half.

The Fire saw Chris Rolfe make his season debut, coming on as a second-half substitute for Oduro. Having sat out since suffering an injury upon re-joining the Fire, Rolfe couldn't give Chicago the necessary spark to avoid the shutout.

Here are the match highlights:

What did you think of the match? Surprised by Rowe's contributions off the bench? Happy to see Feilhaber finally break through? Think the Fire are doomed to miss the playoffs without adding a striker this summer?

  1. My thoughts exactly. A lot of what distinguishes veterans from rookies is consistency more than talent. Glad to see we’re seeing more of that valuable attribute from our defense (consistency, that is). Usually with a Revs game I’m more nervous every time they score a goal b/c that means it’s just a bigger lead to blow*. *(see Islanders, Harrisburg City)

  2. He’s a rookie. It’s not all that surprising for rookies to be up and down. We like the up parts though.

  3. Rowe looked so good in the preseason and in the first few games, what happened to him in the half dozen weeks in between?
