SBI MLS Rookie of the Week: Andrew Wenger

It appears that Montreal Impact coach Jesse Marsch knew what he was doing with No. 1 overall 2012 MLS SuperDraft pick Andrew Wenger all along.

Rewarded with his second straight start at forward, Wenger responded with a classy goal and a 90-minute outing in Montreal's 4-1 victory over the Seattle Sounders to earn SBI MLS Rookie of the Week honors.

Wenger, who starred as a forward in his final season at Duke but projected to be a defender or defensive midfielder as a professional and even took on that role for the U.S. Under-23 national team, has been used almost exclusively as a forward by Marsch, and the results are starting to show. Wenger has three goals on the season and has scored in consecutive games, forcing Marsch to decide between giving the starting nod to him and veteran Italian Bernardo Corradi. Even with Designated Player Marco Di Vaio on the way and Corradi signed through the rest of the season, Wenger appears ready to fight for his place on the field for Montreal.

Wenger beat out the likes of Chicago Fire centerback Austin Berry and FC Dallas centerback Matt Hedges to take home the Week 15 honors.

What did you think of Wenger's performance? Do you think he will emerge as the Rookie of the Year?

I wonder why Porter cut him from the U23 prior to the Olys, they sure could have used a player like him in either the back or up front. That’s right…he had his Akron boys covering those spots.
