As far as starting debuts go, Corey Hertzog could not have asked for a better one.
The on-loan New York Red Bulls forward made his first start for the Wilmington Hammerheads Saturday night, and he took full advantage of the opportunity, scoring twice and assisting on another goal in Wilmington's 3-1 win over first-place Orlando City SC. The loss was the first one suffered by Orlando City this season.
Orlando City's Dennis Chin scored in the first half to put the visitors ahead at Legion Stadium, but Hertzog responded with an equalizer before halftime. Hertzog then assisted on a Mark Briggs goal in the second half before scoring his second of the day in the waning moments of the match.
Here's a look back at all the Week 8 action in USL Pro:
RICHMOND KICKERS 1, HARRISBURG CITY ISLANDERS 1
The Kickers played their first of two games in two days on Friday, and they settled for a 1-1 draw with the Islanders at Skyline Sports Complex. Shane Johnson scored for Richmond in the second half, but Garrett Pettis equalized for the hosts 11 minutes before the death. Richmond goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale made nine saves in the game.
RICHMOND KICKERS 1, ROCHESTER RHINOS 0
Playing in their second game in a two-day span, the Kickers showed little signs of fatigue as they picked up a 1-0 win over the Rhinos at Sahlen's Stadium on Saturday. Kickers defender Luke Vercollone scored five minutes into the game, and that was enough for Richmond to come out victorious. The Rhinos had chances to equalize, but Pascale made 10 saves to keep the clean sheet.
CHARLESTON BATTERY 1, DAYTON DUTCH LIONS 0
The Battery were the latest team to serve the winless Dutch Lions a taste of misery, beating them 1-0 at Beaver Creek High School on Saturday night. Battery midfielder Jose Cuevas scored the winner in second half to lift Charleston to second place in the standings. The Dutch Lions are in last-place at 0-5-4.
