Alonso winner drives Sounders past Rapids

The Colorado Rapids continued their losing ways on Saturday night, and even a home game at Dick's Sporting Goods Park could stop the bleeding.

The Seattle Sounders pushed Colorado's losing skid to six matches after Osvaldo Alonso scored a second-half winner to lead the Sounders to a 2-1 victory.

Alonso volleyed home a cross from Eddie Johnson in the 65th minute to break a 1-1 deadlock as the Sounders moved into third place in the Western Conference with the victory.

Johnson opened the scoring in the second minute when he skied to head home a Mauro Rosales corner kick. The Sounders lost the lead quickly though, when Rapids defender Drew Moor latched onto a bouncing cross in from Brian Mullan just a minute later to tie things up at 1-1.

The Rapids out-shot the Sounders 17-8 on the night, but didn't put up enough dangerous chances to really trouble the Sounders defense in the second half.

Here are the match highlights:

What did you think of the match? See the Sounders making a run at the top of the Western Conference standings? Think the Rapids are done as a playoff contender?

  1. EJ with another strong performance, Montero was useless tonight though. I don’t know if he even touched the ball for the first 25 minutes.
