Americans Abroad: A Look Ahead

After scoring a highlight-reel goal in a friendly this week, Terrence Boyd will be looking to do something he has yet to do in his budding career — make a top-flight, first-team appearance in a game that counts.

Despite already having four caps with the U.S. national team and following a season with Borussia Dortmund's reserves in which he scored 20 goals, the 21-year-old Boyd eyes his pro debut with Rapid Vienna this weekend as the Austrian Bundesliga season gets underway.

Elsewhere around Europe, Sacha Kljestan and defending Belgian league champions Anderlecht return to the field playing Belgian Cup winners Lokeren in the Belgian Super Cup on Sunday, and Charlie Davies eyes his first appearance for Randers in the club's match against Odense BK after being an unused substitute in his first match in uniform for his new club.

The Mexican top flight returns to action as well, with reigning Clausura champion Santos Laguna and Herculez Gomez meeting Michael Orozco Fiscal's San Luis in their Apertura opener. Another matchup featuring multiple Americans takes place Friday night, with the Tijuana trio of Joe Corona, Edgar Castillo and Greg Garza going up against DaMarcus Beasley's Puebla.

  1. Last season the league’s top scorer had 11 goals. Alar and Nuhiu, Rapid’s top scorers had 9 and 8 goals respectively.

So you expect Boyd to dominate the league right away?

  2. The club has released/sold 15 players since Goodson arrived and brought in 5…they are in financial trouble and probably would sell Goodson for a reseasonable sum if an offer were made. He has 18 months on his contract and has interest from Germany, France and long shot inquiry from MLS. And yes, he makes very good money and is the Captain of Brondby. Copenhagen is a great city to live in as well.

  3. Brondy is the biggest club in all of Scandinavia but has been playing like crap for the past year. They paid Goodson pretty good money though. I doubt he would move to a bigger club. Though a low ranked Bundesliga club is possible but he’s 30

  4. One of the US’ top defenders but his team does not sound good at all. They finished 9th or so last year… Wonder if he is looking to move up soon? Id like to see him in the championship or bundesliga

  5. I’d say 10 goals for Boyd. With that he should finish maybe top5 for the season. A good debut season and even better next season and perhaps a WC spot might help him land a better club in 2014

  6. why do these leagues start in July? Most of these leagues play maybe 25-35 games a season. why start now? Is it due to climate or just wanting to capture more of the fans attention before the big leagues start next month?

  7. I am sure Boyd will at least get some meaningful minutes if he doesn’t start!!!

I have Boyd scoring 14 goals in his first season with Rapid.

Anyone else have a prediction on how many goals he scores?
