Crew’s Renteria suspended one game

Emilio Renteria's reaction to a hard challenge has cost him a game.

Renteria was suspended one game and fined an undisclosed amount by the MLS Disciplinary Committee for delivering a headbutt to Sporting Kansas City midfielder Paulo Nagamura in the second half of the Crew's 2-0 loss Saturday night.

Renteria was taken down from behind by Nagamura, and confronted him with the headbutt in the post-tackle altercation. Both players were given yellow cards for the incident — Nagamura for the challenge, Renteria for the reaction — but the MLS DC saw it fit to increase Renteria's punishment. He'll miss Columbus' match Saturday night against D.C. United, a team that will also be shorthanded after goalkeeper Bill Hamid was sent off against the Houston Dynamo on Sunday.

Video of the incident is after the jump:

Do you think Renteria deserved the suspension, or should the yellow card have sufficed? Should he have been given a straight red on the field?

  1. That is a straight homer comment.

What did Nagamura do to deserve a red? No retaliation. A tactical foul: yellow.

Kamara’s situation also deserves no punishment. Yes, he wagged his finger at the injured Anor, but Anor had gone down several times unwarranted previously in the game. And the tackle itself where Anor’s ACL was torn, I’m sure the man himself would not blame Kamara for the injury.

Its sad that people don’t understand football, or when someone deserves to be punished or sent off.

    Its pretty black-and-white.

  2. I want to know why they Nagamura didn’t get his increased to the red he should have had also. And I’m sure Kamara will get away clean for his season ending tackle on Anor.

  3. If Nagamura had pulled a Carlos Ruiz and flopped to the ground, writhing and clutching his face, it might well have been a straight red.
