On a night when Vancouver Whitecaps rookie Darren Mattocks served notice that he has every intention of being the MLS Rookie of the Year this season, it was a seasoned veteran who stole the show late.

Terry Dunfield punished the team that traded him away a year ago, scoring a stoppage-time winner to give Toronto FC a 3-2 victory over the Whitecaps at BMO Field on Wednesday.

Dunfield's last-second strike canceled out a memorable night for Mattocks, who scored two goals on the night, including a jaw-dropping header that saw him jump over two TFC players to score.

It was a good night for rookies, with TFC rookie midfielder Luis Silva finding the net to make the score 1-1 in the second half. Torsten Frings gave TFC a 2-1 lead with his own tally before Mattocks' acrobatic equalizer.

The Whitecaps looked set for a road point before Dunfield skied to head home a Frings corner kick for the winner.

The victory improved Toronto FC's unbeaten run in Canada to five matches.

  1. we have not had many happy days at BMO field but last night was a welcome relief & scoring in the last seconds with a player who rarely scores was fantastic. now can TFC give it going? news that DeGuzman is on the way to Dallas is surfacing on Fan sites & he needs a new home. but do TFC have players coming in?

  2. Wow!! That second Mattocks goal was incredible. He absolutely has world class written all over him. Is he CAP tied to any country yet? I would love to see this young kid called up to the USMNT.

  3. I know Dunfield is a professional soccer player, but he looks like a fat guy to me. Somehow he’s able to run for 90 minutes while still being slightly obese.
