Henry strike carries Red Bulls past Fire

Playing in torrid conditions, at an unusual time during a weekday and on short rest, Thierry Henry still found a way to snap his scoring drought.

Henry chested down a cross-field pass from Sebastien Le Toux and volleyed a left-footed blast from a tight angle off the far post and in at the 71st-minute mark for the only goal in the New York Red Bulls' 1-0 victory over the Chicago Fire at Red Bull Arena Wednesday afternoon.

The goal was Henry's 10th of the season but first since April 28. He missed seven of the Red Bulls' 11 games in that time, but he is still tied for third-most goals in the league. The goal also came at a great time for the Red Bulls (10-5-5), who nudged in front of D.C. United and into second place in the Eastern Conference with the win while avenging an earlier loss this season to Chicago (9-7-4).

New York goalkeeper Bill Gaudette, starting his second game in goal in place of the injured Ryan Meara, earned the clean sheet, but it was Brandon Barklage who came up with the save of the game, heading substitute forward Orr Barouch's attempt on goal off the line in the 83rd minute.

Highlights of the match are after the jump:

  1. I am not sure moving from a club that just went bankrupt to one of the most indebted clubs in the world is a good move.

  2. Henry creates goals out of thin air sometimes. I can’t think of many (any?) other playes in MLS who could have done that. Instead of launching a first-touch rocket, most would have taken a touch, headed toward the endline, and tried to drive something across the goalmouth.

The heat was oppressive, but given the crazy scheduling, RBNY and their fans might have lucked out. Within a few hours after the match, the area was enveloped in a violent thunderstorm that turned the sky pitch-black.

  3. 1. I kinda like the a weekday game. I wish the Fire would schedule a home game on a Friday next year.

    2. I hope wherever Edu goes he gets time. we have seen too many Nat’s players sign with big clubs and never see a pitch. (Josy / Gouch).

    3. As a Fire fan, I have to say they are not a good team right now. While their defense has kept them in matches, their inability to score is prolific. 1 Run of play goal in 5 matches?

    4. Things I learned from the game.
    A. Teams have solved Oduro. He needs to come off of the bench.
    B. Pappa had better play better if he expects European offers.
    C. The Fire may not make the playoffs with out Grazzini in the lineup.

  4. Some sort of Camp Day Promotion still seems silly. Nice to see Seba settle in quickly in NY a Goal and an assist in his first two games.
