Houston Dynamo vs. D.C. United: Your Running Commentary

HOU_Primary_COL     DCU_Primary_COL

Geoff Cameron has been the subject of transfer rumors to Stoke City, but that's not stopping the Houston Dynamo from deploying their star player.

Despite discussions and negotiations of a potential move to the Premier League, Cameron is in the starting lineup for the Houston Dynamo as they face D.C. United for the third and final time this season (9 p.m., Galavision).

The two Eastern Conference contenders have split their first two meetings, with each team holding serve at home. Houston won the most recent match, a 1-0 decision in the opening of BBVA Compass Stadium on May 12. Led by All-Star selections Dwayne De Rosario and Chris Pontius, D.C. needs a win to keep pace with Sporting Kansas City atop the Eastern Conference table, while the Dynamo are hoping to get a strong grip on the fifth spot in the East while keeping pace with the teams ahead of them.

If you are watching tonight's match, please feel free to share any thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below. Enjoy the action.

  1. What’s best for Houston, from watching last night might be not selling him at all (OK, I’ve thought it all along, but just saying). With Cameron in and Ching, Carr, and Watson relegated to bench duty, we looked alright. You ship Cameron out and it’s probably more like the bland, powerless pair of 0-0 draws we got last week. Just enough talent in town to be interesting. Ship part of that out and it’s a borderline playoff team.

In terms of the transfer, it kind of looks like Houston thought they had a $2.7 million deal and instead got a $2.0 million bid, which the league denied and counteroffered. I think we’re trying to avoid being put in the position of an expensive option decision after this season — which I’d pay but I’m not in their FO — so we’re willing to sell at any price, but the decision and negotiating are basically in MLS’ hands. If they think the price is too low, or that they’ve been baited and switched, keep the dude, I won’t cry about it in terms of field product….I don’t understand the Europhilic, “please, sell our player to the prestige league without even worrying about a replacement in place,” fanboy nonsense.

  2. One bad play? I think we’ve done this to them over and over at home for like 3 years with the only close exception being the hot home opener back in May. I felt like the red was a momentum tipping point (DC was giving as much as they took early on….pointing out our defensive weakness is still there) but we were offensively able to get down the flanks on them over and over all night, pre-red, red, and post-red. If you go back to previous years Bruin made his name with a hat trick against them last year as a rookie.

I think the result is more about how we match up than necessarily how good DC is as a team overall against the whole of the league. But it’s kind of like KC, they should be nervous how the playoff schedule works out if we both make it.

  3. Some of the new generation of expensive English announcers are quite good and have a sense of humor and entertainment — Ian Darke — but as an informed, experienced fan who gets annoyed being told for the umpteenth time that “x was with prestigious y club” like some Keeping Up With the Joneses middle/upper class fetish, I generally prefer the Spanish announcing for its energy, humor, and simplicity. A lot of the Americans are snobby and boring to the point of annoyance…which is ironic because the sports broadcasting template of the day, ESPN, is generally totally different.

  4. I can remember when most televised soccer was on Spanish language TV, including US games. The switch to English language TV primacy has been a creature of the past 15-20 years, and people have gotten used to that, which is why there was a furor over the Guatemala qualifying game suddenly not being handled by ESPN.

So, Anglos have grown used to it, but they are not the only viewers, and if they want English language for everything they need to watch more TV games and prompt more national telecasts. As it is, this reflects the audience (sort of, probably not even).

  5. Did anyone see the “@MLS: Free Geoff Cameron” sign. Classy by the Houston fans understanding the soccer world, and thinking about what’s best for one of their own players. Hopefully, MLS front offices get the message and approve the transfer. Don’t pull another Twellman incident!

  6. Honest question, but did you stop reading after the initial question? Because if you did, you missed that this post was about their overall play against top teams in MLS. Of course this result looks bad (being down to 10 guys will do that), but it had much more to do with the rest of their season. Lucky for DC, they don’t have a lot of games against good teams left.

  7. I don’t think this game proves anything against DCU, and I’m saying that as a Dynamo fan. One bad play early on, and the game was over for them. The result didn’t really reflect how good they are as a team.

  8. So, can we officially stop talking about DC United as a real contender in MLS? I’ll give them credit for handling their business against the teams they should beat (i.e. non-playoff teams), but they are dismal against the top teams in the league. 8 points, 2-6-2 against teams currently slotted for the playoffs, easily the worst in the East, and second worst amongst playoff slotted teams (Vancouver has 9 points). Beating the Toronto’s and Philadelphia’s of the MLS is great, but DC hardly looks up to par when it comes to being a true contender.

  9. No sh*t!

I didn’t want to go there myself, but d*mn if that isn’t some xenophobic-tinged bs from Sue Barnett. Amazing.

  10. As a Philly Union fan, I’m really starting to dislike how Houston makes it that much harder for my team to succeed. Please stop winning. Thank you.

  11. I’m almost a hundred percent positive that when a game is being broadcast by ANY other channel (ie espn, galavision, NBC sports) that mls live CANNOT show that same game; tv rights and all.

  12. Ok I’m not sure if you’re being serious or not because this sounds almost borderline … I don’t know… just weird. So if you’re being ironi, my bad I couldn’t tell.

But this game (and usually at least one game a week) is bought by and shown by Galavision, a channel produced by and directed at hispanics. It’s in Spanish because well, ummm, obviously.

As to your suggestion about an English alternative, that would only ever become relevant if enough English speaking Americans watched galavision programming enough to warrant the funding for such a thing, which i doubt is happening.

  13. You actually stopped watching a match because you couldn’t listen to the commentary in English?

  14. Korb on dc united is the lowest sock wearing soccer player I’ve ever seen. It does not appear that he is wearing shin guards. Can anyone explain this mystery?

Hamid would have been better off giving up a goal that early in the game than risk getting sent off. DCU never got back in the game and they were the better team for the first 10-15 mins. I hope Willis keeps the job for a while.

  15. Why is it that the Dynamo are in Houston tonight and only on a Spanish speaking station? This isn’t right. We have SAP on our remote to change a station to the Spanish language, but none to switch to English, when it is only televised in Spanish. There could be alternate stations for the two languages. Please give this suggestion your consideration, as we have stopped watching the Dynamo tonight because of the language only being in Spanish.
