Mid-Day Ticker: Collin suffers facial fracture, Kompany signs new deal & more

Sporting Kansas City centerback and MLS All-Star starter Aurelien Collin will miss the next 1-to-2 weeks after suffering a facial fracture at PPL Park Wednesday night.

Collin suffered the injury in the first half of the All-Star Game after a clash with Chelsea's Michael Essien in the center circle. Collin caught Essien from behind with a bear-hug-like tackle, and as the two went to ground, Collin's face connected with Essien. He remained on the ground for a few minutes and was looked at by the MLS medical staff before ultimately returning to the game. He was subbed off following John Terry's first-half equalizer, giving Philadelphia Union centerback Carlos Valdes the chance to enter the game in front of his home fans.

Sporting KC plays the Columbus Crew Saturday, Stoke City in a friendly next Wednesday and the New England Revolution the following Saturday. That is followed up by the U.S. Open Cup final on Aug. 8 — a game for which Collin is suspended — meaning a likely return date is the Aug. 11 bout against D.C. United.

Here are a few more stories from around the soccer world:

KOMPANY SIGNS LONG-TERM CITY DEAL

Reigning Premier League Player of the Season Vincent Kompany is not leaving Etihad Stadium anytime soon.

The Manchester City captain signed a new six-year deal with the Premier League champions, extending his stay with the club through 2018. At 26, Kompany has emerged as one of the world's premiere centerbacks and was as key a player in City's title run as there was on the high-cost roster.

Kompany, a Belgian international, has been with City since 2008. He'll be 32 by the time his latest deal expires, one that will carry him through the prime of his career.

WEST HAM PRESSES FOR CARROLL

West Ham's interest in Liverpool striker Andy Carroll has not waned despite recent rejection.

The London Premier League club has submitted another bid for Carroll, one that the BBC reports would initially be a loan with a commitment to buying him next summer. Ever since Brendan Rodgers took over at Liverpool there has been rampant speculation that Carroll's time with the club is coming to an end. Liverpool has been adamant that they won't loan Carroll and that they are looking for a permanent transfer, but West Ham's latest bid, offers a compromise.

FIFA SUSPENDS BIN HAMMAM

Mohamed Bin Hammam may have had his lifetime ban from FIFA overturned, but the former FIFA presidential candidate is not having an easy time of getting reintegrated into the organization.

FIFA suspended Bin Hammam 90 days while an investigation into his alleged financial improprieties with the Asian confederation is conducted. American Michael Garcia, an independent investigator hired by FIFA last week to look into seedy activity, is leading the latest investigation into Bin Hammam's actions.

Do you think Sporting Kansas City will be OK without Collin for the next week or two? Were you surprised to see him re-enter against Chelsea? How big of a move is it for City to lock up Kompany? Think Carroll would do well at West Ham? Do you see Bin Hammam ever having a role for FIFA ever again?

  1. Yep. Neven Markovic was signed earlier this month as a defender. They’ve also been working with a young Barcelona product, Oriol Rosell, on trial. Here’s hoping it works out, but I think Collin’s loss will definitely hurt.

  2. Collin’s a big part of what SKC does, so as a fan, his absence is worrisome. Luckily, the meaningful game’s he’ll miss are against the Crew, Revs and Sounders, so we can afford to be down a starter or two.

  3. That is City’s best decision they’ve ever made. For me, Kompany was City’s MVP all year and is the key to their success going forward.
