Chivas USA added some quality defensive depth on Friday with the acquisition of the rights to veteran MLS centerback Bobby Burling. The Goats landed Burling's rights from Montreal in exchange for an international roster slot in 2013.

Burling returns to Chivas USA, where he played from 2007 to 2009. He was acquired in the 2011 MLS Expansion Draft by the Impact, but never played a game for Montreal. Burling was a regular for the San Jose Earthquakes in 2011.

Chivas USA must still sign Burling to a contract, but made room for his anticipated acquisition by waiving Scott Gordon.

Here are some other recent MLS notes to catch you up on league proceedings:

SPORTING KC SIGNS SERBIAN DEFENDER

The Sporting Kansas City roster is one of the most diverse in MLS, and it added even more international flavor on Friday with the team's signing of Serbian defender Neven Markovic.

Signed from Greek Super League side Droxa Drama FC, the 25-year-old Markovic was added to the KC roster after the team waived defender Shawn Singh.

SEATTLE"S GONZALEZ FINED

The MLS Disciplinary Committee announced that Seattle defender Leo Gonzalez was fined an undisclosed amount for "embellishing contact" with RSL forward Alvaro Saborio during their scoreless draw on Wednesday.

Here is the incident Gonzalez was fined for.

  1. thats right. He was never under contract with Montreal yet under these silly rules Montreal owned his “rights.”

  2. I remember that Burling never signed a contract w Impact. Earlier on in the pre- and season, before Ferrari arrived and before Rivas came back from his first injury, we all wondered why Burling wasn’t signed. I believe the real reason is that he didn’t want to stay in Montreal. Please correct me if i’m mistaken, but i believe this is the case.

  3. more MLS gimmicks. MLS team trades players rights to another team without consent of player.

Burling is not aloud to negotiate a contract with any team. Can only accept the contract by team that owns his rights.

man i can’t wait until we get a real soccer league. I’m getting tired of waiting though.

  4. I’m curious what more you would like? I mean, if the argument is that we’re tired of signing up washed-up euros (and I do not believe Nesta is at all washed up), the argument is young talent. I think both Bengston and Boniek fit that role.

I’m curious as to what you are saying

  5. Yawn. Where are the real summer signings?

Bengtson and Boniek are OK Central Americans, Nesta is old, otherwise nothing.

Every January, we always hear “wait until summer” and that it’s a better window, more available. Then so very little happens for most teams.
