Jack Reyna, the son of former U.S. national team great and current U.S. Soccer youth technical director Claudio Reyna, passed away Thursday after a battle with cancer. He was 13.

Reyna, his wife Danielle and their family issued a statement through U.S. Soccer on Friday:

“It is with a heavy heart that we confirm that Jack Reyna lost his battle with cancer (Thursday). Jack was so courageous during his two-year fight that he's become a hero and inspiration to many. Surrounded by his entire family, Jack passed peacefully at the age of 13.

"In lieu of flowers, all of those wishing to show support for the family can make a donation to the Claudio Reyna Foundation on Jack's behalf. Thanks to all for the outpouring of support, prayers, and well wishes. Rest in Peace Jack Reyna. You were loved by many and your legacy will carry on."

For those who wish to do so, donations can be made to the Making Headway Foundation in Jack's memory. The New York Red Bulls, one of Claudio Reyna's former teams, will wear black armbands to honor Jack's memory during this weekend's match against the Philadelphia Union.

SBI offers our deep and heartfelt condolences to the Reyna family on their tragic loss.

  5. As the father of 6 with a child who has and is battling a childhood cancer for the last 4.5 years, my heart goes out to the Reyna family, the Hurtado family, the Wu family, and the countless families watching their little ones battle in all of the hospitals around this country, world, etc…

Reyna family: Sorry for your loss. I know it is devastating. Take solace in knowing that a wonderful person entered your lives albeit briefly and gave countless memories you’ll cherish always. Please don’t forget about Gio who undoubtedly took a back seat to some extent.

I must say, that watching the Quakes with the community outreach in Stanford, LPCH in particular brightened the lives of so many children with cancer, struggling in the day to day of just living.

Unfortunately this disease touches us all in one way or another eventually. Peace and blessings.
