SBI Mid-Season MLS Coach of the Year: Frank Yallop

A year after missing the playoffs, the San Jose Earthquakes boast the top record in Major League Soccer. And veteran coach Frank Yallop, it's safe to say, deserves much of the credit.

Yallop has led the Earthquakes to an 11-4-3 record with a league-leading 36 goals scored. After winning titles with San Jose in 2001 and 2003, the 48-year-old coach has his side in contention for a third MLS Cup.

Chosen as the top MLS coach at mid-season by a vote of SBI staff members, Yallop beat out a strong field that included Vancouver's Martin Rennie, Chicago's Frank Klopas and Columbus' Robert Warzycha.

What do you think of Yallop receiving the honor? Would Rennie, Klopas or Warzycha have been a better choice? Or perhaps someone else entirely?

  1. Exactly.

For SBI to write “Yallop beat out a strong field that included Vancouver’s Martin Rennie, Chicago’s Frank Klopas and Columbus’ Robert Warzycha” and not even acknowledge what Olsen has done in bringing this club up from the cellar is a shocking oversight.

  2. Yeah I don’t think many Olsen fans would argue that Yallop doesn’t deserve it, but to not have Olsen as a close second is what seems ridiculous. I am kind of assuming it was an oversight/error, oh well. We all know who will bring home the trophy!

  3. Olsen had more to work with (DeRo, Najar, and Pontius with a better record the previous year) than Yallop (Wondo and… no one else, with a pathetic record).

Props to Olsen, who is one of my all-time faves, but Yallop gets the nod at this point.

  4. To answer your question. No they wouldn’t be a better choice.

But, Ben Olsen might. Is your dislike of DC United so great that you could overlook the outstanding job the Bennie has done in DC?

  5. Agree – SJ has certainly improved this season, so I can’t disagree with this, but how does Olsen not finish 1A, let alone miss the honorable mention list?

  6. Really? Not even a mention of Ben Olsen? Who has DC at the top of the east (and only one win behind SJ) in only his second full year as coach, after *also* missing the playoffs last season?
