SBI Mid-Season MLS Most Valuable Player: Chris Wondolowski

Chris Wondolowski just won't stop scoring goals.

After leading the league in goals each of the past two seasons with 18 tallies in 2010 and 16 last year, Wondolowski has already found net 14 times in just 16 games for San Jose this season, leading the Earthquakes to a league-best 11-4-3 record. The 29-year-old has found a variety of ways to score, beating goalkeepers with goals spectacular, gutsy and cheeky.

Wondolowski was voted the mid-season MVP by SBI staff members, finishing ahead of candidates including D.C. United midfielder-forward Dwayne De Rosario, Real Salt Lake midfielder Kyle Beckerman and New York Red Bulls forward Kenny Cooper.

What do you think of Wondolowski claiming the honor? Are De Rosario, Beckerman and Cooper more deserving? Or is there a dark-horse candidate who deserves recognition?

  1. The most frustrating thing about wando is he just doesnt translate to the national team level. He’s just a step too slow. As a U.S. supporter really wish he would be even half as productive on the national stage as he is with his club.

  2. Yes David, I am.

The strange thing is, the author says Wondo can’t stop scoring goals. The way I see it, he can’t start scoring goals either!

  3. 29 is a little up there for some European clubs. They tends to like their players very young when they come the Americas. I thin he should stay and build a real legacy at San Jose and in the MLS.

  4. why is he still in MLS? hE SHould try his luck in Europe. Maybe at a club in Denmark or Switzerland or Greece. I’m sure he would be pulling close to 500 K. It would drastically up his chances for NT duty, playing in Europe that is. He’s only 29 so it’s not improbable.

  5. DeRo has been in third gear so far this season. Will be interesting to see if he can make a similar run to his incredible performance the last half of last year that led to his MVP.

  6. Right now it’s a two person race, Wondolowski in first and DeRosario in second. If Beckerman is even in the running, he’s so far back he’s in danger of getting lapped.
Cooper isn’t in the running, he has zero goals zero assists since the end of May, and he wasn’t even off with the national team like Wondo.
