SBI MLS Best XI: Week 19

The MLS Week 19 fireworks exploded late Saturday night, with some of the league's most recognizable names putting forth the best performances of the week to earn SBI MLS Best XI recognition.

David Beckham marked his top performance of the season with two highlight-reel goals in Portland, and his goal tally was matched by fellow DP teammate Robbie Keane. A little bit down the West Coast, San Jose's Chris Wondolowski continued his push for another Golden Boot, notching a hat trick against Real Salt Lake to boost his goal total to 17.

Another pair of DPs make our Best XI as well. Fabian Castillo's goal and assist in Colorado helped FC Dallas snap a 13-game winless stretch, while new signing Oscar Boniek Garcia scored his first MLS goal for the Houston Dynamo in their rout of D.C. United. That game was also marked by an omnipresent performance by Geoff Cameron, who may have played his final game in MLS as his potential transfer to Stoke City continues to be negotiated.

Here is SBI's MLS Best XI for Week 19:

Say what you want about David Beckham, but he’s a great ball striker. He needs to conduct a clinic for the USMNT on ball striking. We waste too many free kicks and corners.

  • Gnarls

Honorable mention to Donovan. Franklin had a great assist, but not much else to warrant honorable mention.

  • go usa

Franklin is one of the most overrated players in MLS. It’s a mystery what spell he has on Arena. For every good cross, he puts 3 or 4 into the stands.

so arne friedrich completely marks mattocks out of the fire/vancouver game but takes a BS second yellow and doesn’t make this list anywhere? and meanwhile you’re putting anibaba on the left?

  • SteveE

2 Assists and a game saving clearance. Huge snub. Johansson was key in this game

I really like the mention of Anibaba. While Pardo got the MOTM award for his goal against Vancouver. In my book Anibaba had a great game. He started at Right Back and made some really nice runs, coupled with quality ball movement. After Friedrich was sent off, he moved to Center Back, making clutch plays to preserve the win.

The BS yellow, was the 1st one. The ref was not going to issue it, but after enough whining he showed yellow. The 2nd one was 50/50, between Berry and Friedrich so it could have gone either way, but it was a good yellow.

BTW, I am not sure that the positions depicted above are the “exact” spots on the field. I think it is more Forwards, Mids and Defenders.

As an SJ fan, I don’t understand how Jason Hernandez beats Victor Bernardez here. Bernardez has been excellent for SJ and against RSL he was no different. In fact Hernandez was probably the least deserving of SJ’s defenders (even if he had a relatively good game).

I also think it is about time for the talking heads to recognize just how excellent Rafa Baca has been for SJ. He’s SJ’s Pirlo, the quiet and efficient master of possession and passing. He makes it look easy, and maybe that is why his good work often goes unnoticed.

Hardly. You expect a player with a red card to make the Best XI (or even HM)!?

Sounds like the only clownshow in town is you, bro.
