SBI MLS Player of the Week: Jairo Arrieta

The Columbus Crew offense has struggled to generate goals on a regular basis, a problem the team has had going back to last year, but Robert Warzycha's side may have found the answer to that problem in the form of Costa Rican striker Jairo Arrieta.

The newly-signed forward showed just what he can do this past weekend, scoring a pair of quality goals, including this long-range strike, to help the Crew post a vital 2-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City at Livestrong Sporting Park. The performance earned Arrieta SBI MLS Player of the Week honors as well.

Arrieta beat out a strong field of candidates that also included Seattle's Eddie Johnson, Chicago's Sean Johnson and Real Salt Lake's Alvaro Saborio.

What did you think of Arrieta's performance? Which MLS player impressed you the most last weekend?

  1. actually, it was Arrieta’s third appearance for the crew. He started last week against DC (Renteria suspended) and had an assist on the game-winner.
Crew hadn’t scored 2 in a game (as an entire 11) for at least a month, Jairo did it, almost by himself. Player of the week.
    O-H! JAIRO!!

  2. i think your forgetting that it was Arrieta’s first game with the crew. Anyone that scores a brace in their first game especially when being an underdog in the game deserves it.

  3. I admit that I did not see the Arrieta goals, but Sean John was ON FIRE (pun intended) against San Jose. Fortunately San Jose tested his shot-stopping ability and did not stress him too much on crosses (though he’s looking much more solid in the air recently – witness his one-handed snag on a cross this weekend). His reflexes are sick, and he totally robbed San Jose of what could have been 3-4 goals.

  4. Umm, Sean Johnson? Dude had 10 saves, at least 2-3 of which could win GOTW by themselves. He single handedly kept the Fire in the game. I have seen some good GK performances this year league wide, but right now his performance is GK of the year stuff up to this point in the season at least. The brace was nice but no way should Arrieta win this week over Johnson.
