SBI MLS Rookie of the Week: Andy Rose

Andy Rose might not have gotten on the score sheet this past week, but his contributions to a four-point week for the Seattle Sounders — most notably in the club's 2-1 victory over the Colorado Rapids Saturday night — did not go unnoticed.

After coming off the bench in a mid-week draw against Real Salt Lake, the rookie out of UCLA helped the Sounders snap a nine-game winless stretch in a 90-minute performance, with his influential play in central midfield disrupting the Rapids and earning him SBI MLS Rookie of the Week honors.

Rose, selected in the supplemental draft by RSL before being traded to Seattle, edged out the likes of Antoine Hoppenot, who scored his second goal off the bench for the Philadelphia Union to cap the club's win over Toronto FC; and Darren Mattocks, who scored an opportunistic goal in Vancouver's win over Colorado last Wednesday, to take home the weekly honors.

What did you think of Rose's play? Which rookie do you think had the best Week 18 in MLS?

  1. I wasn’t impressed early on in the season but he has been better with every game it seems.

I think he is a good like-for-like swap with Brad Evans and it seems like he is getting more of the minutes lately?!?

  2. He can get an early yellow, but seems to settle for the most part. I am liking him. He seems to be one of the better options in the middle.

  3. Hoppenot is making a big impact – plays the last 30 minutes of each game and consistently is scoring, getting PKs, etc. – if I only used him more early in the season, I might still be the Union’s manager.

  5. I saw Rose in what I believe what his first game earlier in the year and he was absolutely dreadful. He received an early yellow but should have been sent off for a second yellow within the first twenty minutes and looked completely outclassed. The few times I have watched Seattle since then I have seen him get better. He was very solid the other night vs. Colorado. Nothing special but solid.

  6. Yeah, it’s purpose is not to be “fake dirt”…they’re small pieces of rubber. Without those, players wouldn’t be able to wear cleats. They’d have to wear “turf” shoes without spikes.

  7. It provides “cushion” for what I suppose is concrete underneath the field turf. Additionally, I assume since it’s recycled material, usually tires, it soaks up moisture and acts as a natural drainage of sorts. Those are my uneducated guesses so take them at face value.
