SBI MLS Rookie of the Week: Bryan Gaul

While some of the more well-known rookies continued to impress this past weekend, it was one who many do not know much about that claimed SBI's MLS Rookie of the Week award.

Los Angeles Galaxy left back Bryan Gaul claimed this week's honors after helping the Galaxy blank FC Dallas, 1-0, on Saturday. Gaul shut down speedy winger Jackson for much of the encounter and that played a pivotal part in allowing Los Angeles to come away with the three points at FC Dallas Stadium.

Gaul beat out Vancouver Whitecaps forward Darren Mattocks as well as Austin Berry of the Chicago Fire to grab his first SBI MLS Rookie of the Week award this season.

What do you think of Gaul winning the award? Think it should have gone to someone else? Impressed with Gaul's performance?

  1. No. Actually he was recruited to Bradley as a wide midfielder. Played there his freshman year and moved to left back for his soph year. Then his junior year he transitioned to forward where he scored a lot of goals. He then continued to play forward his senior year and got invited to the mls combine as a fwd. he was then drafted in hopes of being a cb but galaxy has seen his attacking abilities therefore putting him at left back

  2. Actually, the more popular radio shows have between 10-14 million listeners. Soccer never receives the attention it deserves in the US in general.

  3. He did fine, but i don’t think it was outstanding. i was also at the match and to prop up a guy versus a suspect Dallas squad must mean a slw week for other rooks? I am by no means a Dallas fan but Jackson routinely dribbled around him on more than one occasion.

  4. Actually he was drafted as a CB but he was recruited to Bradley University as a forward where he was All-Missouri Valley Conference in his Freshman year before being converted to a CB

  5. I’m sorry you had to endure that. I watched on TV and I literally thought it was a joke at first. I usually won’t make fun of kids, but I have no sympathy for anyone who butchers the national anthem.

@Gnarls, no one listens to talk radio anyway. They’ll never give soccer the attention it deserves.

  6. Don’t look know MLS but 7 of the guys who played for LA on Saturday were either home-grown or drafted by L.A.

Franklin, Gonzalez, De La Garza, Gaul, Jimenez, Villarreal, Stephens

I know there’s people desperately wishing for LA to fall back down, but so long as the team keeps drafting/producing players this capable, you better get used to LA being one of the top teams in the league year in and year out.

  7. I’m very happy with LA’s up-and-comers (Villareal, McBean, Gaul), but the only way to replace Becks, Donovan and Keane is to bring in experienced DPs. I would say all three of those guys’ best attribute is their soccer IQ, their vision.

  8. The LA Galaxy should continue to develop the younger players on the roster. Currently, LA has many veteran players who are getting older and will soon HAVE to be effectively replaced for them to contend in the future. LD, Beckham, and Keane are all in their thirties, and also very important to the team. The Galaxies defense is starting to get younger though, so that’s good news. Gonzalez is one of the top 5 defenders in the league easily (when healthy) he’ll be important for this team going forward.

  9. I have liked this guy since preseason, but I fell in love when he megged a guy late in the Chicago game while playing as a defensive mid. I’ve been hoping we were looking towards the future now that Dunivant is getting up there and it looks like we found him. Maybe not better than Dunivant now, but give him a year or two and he’ll be great. Same with Tommy Meyer. Meyer has shown some flashes and some mistakes, but I think we did a great job with the draft this year and the past 4 years.

  10. I’m definitely excited for the dude. A fast and athletic natural left-footed back is hard to find in these parts, and he has to be pretty good to steal a starting role in a backline featuring Dunivant, Franklin, De La Garza, and Gonzo plus Leonardo to a lesser extent.

  11. Yes, I saw it. “Terrible” doesn’t even begin to describe it. My local AM talk station in LA even played a clip of it this morning. I guess that’s what it takes for the Galaxy to get a mention on talk radio.

  12. Gaul 100% deserves the award! Ever since he became the starting left back LA has been shutting down some great offenses in the mls. Not to mention he was drafted a a forward and has filled in very nice on the backline with his aggresive play

  13. Gaul has been fantastic! LA is finally seeing their youth blossoming this season with Jimenez and hopefully Villareal.

Brek Shea should go to the Galaxy to rekindle his fire. Having Donovan as his mentor would be invaluable
