SBI MLS Rookie of the Week: Connor Lade

When Thierry Henry called rookie Connor Lade one of the New York Red Bulls' players of the season more than a week ago, the high praise seemed a bit generous. Last Saturday, Lade showed just why Henry and his teammates are so high on the St. John's product.

Lade turned in a Man of the Match-caliber effort in providing two assists in the Red Bulls' 2-0 victory against the Philadelphia Union. That performance, and his energetic second-half cameo in New York's 1-0 victory against Chicago, helped Lade earn SBI MLS Rookie of the Week honors.

Lade beat out a field of rookies that included Toronto FC's Luis Silva, FC Dallas' Matt Hedges and LA Galaxy's Bryan Gaul.

What did you think of Lade's performances last week? What rookie impressed you the most in MLS?

  1. He is a “bull” and lives up to the name, very aggressive and focused. This kid puts maximum effort into every minute…….never lets up.

  2. For a long time, there was the misconception that Backe didn’t get young Americans/Academy products a chance because RBNY cut Kassel & Hot.

Truth is, they were cut because neither one is any good. Lade IS good, got a chance & is making the most of it.

  3. and before people start saying how he didnt have that great of the season, remember when Juan pablo angel came here he only scored four goals the season before. He has the right personality and skill to be a catalyst for this team. Hope its true.

  4. Lade is Richie Williams-esque – great motor and aggressiveness, but his ball skill and delivery is better. He appears to be a right footed player who plays primarily on the left (with a nice ability to cross) that makes him an even more versatile player for moving around the pitch.

FYI – bbc sport is reporting the Tim Cahill move to RBNY now – hopefully the RBNY DP3 saga gets resolved tonight.

  5. When a team has a number of players who (at times) combine skill and feistiness/hard work–Lindpere, Henry, Lade, Dax, Barklage, Le Toux, etc.–special things can happen.

P.S. Heard anything about Tim Cahill to NY Ives?

  7. Lade has been terrific for the Red Bulls. RBNY is built on a core of excellent young American players, despite what all the haters think.
