This Weekend’s Soccer on TV

This weekend's soccer schedule is dominated by MLS, with some intriguing games highlighting the slate including one with major implications atop the Supporters' Shield table.

The top two teams in the Western Conference and the league — the San Jose Earthquakes and Real Salt Lake — square off for the third and final time during the regular season, with the Earthquakes going for the season sweep at Buck Shaw Stadium. The last time the two teams met at Buck Shaw, RSL was reduced to nine men after red cards to Jamison Olave and Fabian Espindola and succumbed on two stoppage-time goals. Chris Wondolowski scored the late game-winner in their second meeting at Rio Tinto Stadium on June 23.

Eastern Conference contenders D.C. United and Houston also meet for a third and final time, with the Dynamo looking to topple first-place United at BBVA Compass Stadium. Prior to that game on Sunday, the league's All-Star team will be announced at halftime of the nationally televised battle between the New York Red Bulls and Seattle Sounders.

Looking for something outside of MLS? Turn your attention to Brazil, where Internacional and Santos square off in a match that has lost a bit of its luster considering Brazilian Olympians Neymar, Paulo Henrique Ganso, Leandro Damiao and Oscar won't play while they train ahead of the London Games but still boasts two of the country's top teams.

  1. this is why single entity is so wrong. Houston should be able to negotiate a transfer themselves. It should not be MLS that negotiates the transfer.

  2. why is MLS’s weekend schedule so all over the place?

there should be saturday day games. Who wants to watch a soccer match at 11pm at night? Or even if you’re on the west coast that 8pm start is too late. I’m going out to dinner and for a few drinks on saturday night. I think a lot of people go out on a saturday night.

now and then i say to myself that im going to get into MLS but they make it difficult. saturday day time is when the sport should be on tv. No wonder the ratings are terrible.

  3. Per Ortiz at the Houston Chronicle, Stoke is considering a MLS counteroffer to its Geoff Cameron transfer bid. Deal sounds like it might have been denied at Stoke bid but then counteroffer created at Cameron’s request.

[FWIW, the Chronicle had initially suggested an agreement (with Houston) to $2.7 million, but reporter now tweeting MLS bid resulting in counteroffer was closer to $2 million and MLS apparently wants more. Hmmmm perhaps $2.7 million?]

  4. 11pm Portland – Galaxy game? I can see during the work week the need to allow people on the West coast a chance to get home and drive to the game. But a nationally televised game starting 11pm east coast is asanine if the league wants to draw a national viewing audience. I really enjoy watching Timbers games, but I’m not willing to do so if it involves these type of start times.

  5. MLS is in such a good spot right now. I think We need to step back and appreciate what we have. It really is great.

LA trying to rebound, on the road against a team that crushed them earlier this season.

Seattle – NY, both teams trying to be great.

SLC – San Jose, nuf said.

Etc. With many teams, still feeling like they could be close to the best playing each other.
    Good times.
