Just three days after what was arguably their worst game of the year, the Portland Timbers responded to that disappointing show against Colorado by putting together the kind of victory has just might spark a full-blown turnaround.

The Timbers scored goals in each half, including Danny Mwanga's first for Portland since joining the team from Philadelphia, to earn a 2-1 victory against the San Jose Earthquakes on Tuesday night.

Mwanga re-directed a Franck Songo'o cross in the 29th minute to open the scoring in a first half that saw Portland created several chances, including an Eric Alexander shot that rattled off the post.

The Earthquakes looked better in the second half, but went down by two goals when Jack Jewsbury pounced on a loose ball spilled by Earthquakes goalkeeper David Bingham to make the score 2-0. Timbers defender Futty Danso did his part on the goal, making contact with Bingham and jarring the ball loose.

San Jose pulled to within a goal when Alan Gordon re-directed a Marvin Chavez shot past Troy Perkins, but that was as close as the Earthquakes came.

The victory moved Portland to 19 points on the season, just three behind Colorado for fifth place in the West. The loss snapped San Jose's three-game winning streak.

  1. Bingham did pretty well, but was too timid on that ball into the box- should’ve flattened Danso.. And held onto the ball, of course.
