Dynamo grab late draw with Crew to stay undefeated at home

The Columbus Crew were minutes away from handing the Houston Dynamo their first MLS defeat inside of BBVA Compass Stadium, but a late Adam Moffat goal made sure to keep the Dynamo unbeaten at home.

Moffat scored in the 82nd minute to help the Dynamo pick up a 2-2 draw with the Columbus Crew on Sunday, a result that ties Houston with the Chicago Fire for third place in the Eastern Conference. Columbus goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum got his hands on the shot, but he made a mess of it and allowed the ball to get away and cross the goal-line.

Moffat's goal canceled out Eddie Gaven's second-half strike in a match that marked Crew Designated Player Federico Higuain's debut and Ricardo Clark's first game back in Houston as a member of the Dynamo.

Spectacular first-half goals were exchanged, as Brad Davis netted a beautiful opener for the hosts before Cole Grossman pulled the Crew level shortly after the half-hour mark.

Here are the match highlights:

What do you think of Houston's 2-2 draw with the Crew? Surprised Columbus handed Houston its first home loss of the year? Expecting the Dynamo to finish in the top three in the Eastern Conference this season?

  1. Glad that announcer provided the jinx! Hahaha I kid. I’m kinda surprised where the Crew are in the standings because they always play great against the Dynamo. It was definitely entertaining though.

  2. I think the Dynamo just looked off last night. Honestly though, that’s how games with the Crew tend to go for us. They’re a pretty solid team despite their overall points. Nonetheless, I agree with your Clark-Creavalle induction. I just worry about Warren’s play on the left. We’ve seen him CDM and at RB, but I don’t believe he’s played LB yet.

I don’t think we we’re being outcoached really. The guys just couldn’t command fluid movement for long enough and that left us scrambling in quick transitions far too often. And with Cameron now gone, the quick counter achilles may start to rear it’s ugly head.

I’ve got to say that Jermaine Taylor is quietly stealing the Dynamo MVP spot in my opinion. Sure, it’s not a flashy pick with a bunch of goals or assists, but I think it’s the right one. He physically dominates forwards on a regular basis, blocks shots like he wants Tally’s job, tirelessly works from line to line, rarely loses a 50/50 or header, etc. He’s just everything fans want to see in a player. Top class.

  3. I think this is a matter of taste because Carr tripping over the ball and sending in wormburners drives me up a wall. Kandji has Oduro-type qualities, he will get open, he will just frustrate you with how often he finishes. But since to me soccer is about creating chances, I’d rather have frustrating chances from Kandji than Ching scoring once a month.

I see the problem as, Bruin is not being as productive. Kandji is being relied on more as a primary target. I think we are better off with Davis, Boniek, and Kandji setting the table and then Bruin finishing. I think teams are making it harder for us defensively, and we are resorting to more longballs, which places more emphasis on Kandji than Bruin.

I think we need to get downfield quicker but with the ball more on the ground wide.

  4. Man, I really thought the Crew were gonna pull that off last night. The Crew announcers point out that that Houston hasn’t beaten the Crew since 2008, and that when Eddie Gaven scores they are 18-0-4 in their last 22 games when this happens.

  5. Higuain was very impressive.

Kinnear is starting to lose the momentum of the 433 switch and new signings by running out the same, sub-optimum lineup every week. Clark and Creavalle need to come in, Moffat and Ashe need to come out. I was a tad astounded Clark was sat behind Moffat, and I think the rising scorelines against the Dynamo suggest the “Cameron void” is in the backline. Ashe is the weak link, and the rookie Creavalle a superior athletic, tackling player.

I’m also no big Calen Carr fan, because most nights are like last night.

I also felt like subbing in two big kahunas up top and taking out Kandji for Clark was goofy subbing. My impression of the Dynamo this year is we are better on the quick counter, than on this get it wide and whack it in half court rubbish. The team was doing that pre-transfer window and was mid-table doing it. If we let teams execute defensive game plans and settle for crossing the ball from the periphery we are doing teams a favor. The two goals came from the midfielders knocking it around, not hitting it towards Ching and hoping.

With the CCL approaching I’m going to be interested how the Dynamo go forward. They are starting to stutter a little and (a) money on the table time is approaching as is (b) the CCL. Gotta get our acts together and come up with offensive game plans and lineups that put our best foot forward and take the initiative. Teams are not going to just sit back and let us 433 them to death. I think we’re just being outcoached right now.
