Edu completes three-year deal with Stoke, awaits work permit for eligibility

Maurice Edu's move to Stoke City is officially complete.

Edu signed a three-year deal with Stoke Thursday, and the club has been given the green light by the English FA to finalize his work permit that will make him eligible for selection. According to the club's official website, it is unlikely that will be completed ahead of this weekend's match against Wigan Athletic, meaning that Edu will debut for the club following the international break.

Edu joins fellow American Geoff Cameron at Stoke City, where he will fight for playing time in a crowded central midfield. There also remains the possibility that Edu plays in central defense, where he stood out for the U.S. national team against Mexico, for the Potters, as manager Tony Pulis alluded to his versatility when the club initially agreed to the transfer with Rangers, where Edu played from 2008 until this season.

What do you think of this development? Excited for Edu to play in the Premier League?

  1. That’s the dream scenario for USMNT fans; but keep in mind that Stoke’s CB pairing of Shawcross and Huth have done pretty well the past few years, so it won’t be easy for Cam and Edu to steal their starting jobs…

More likely, at least at first, is that our boys get some time at midfield (Cameron played 90 vs Arsenal and against Swindon), and occasionally fill in at CB for Cup matches or to spell the starters.

  2. What about his passing? That’s even worse than his first touch! It’s like he can’t maintain his concentration for more than five minutes at a time. He’ll make a few decent passes and then one that’s right to the other team or where the weighting is wayy off…

  3. I tend to agree with this. I have never been overly impressed with Edu, but he seems to hang around the USMNT roster for one reason or another.

  4. he still has room to improve and hopefully this move will strengthen his weaknesses because i agreed his first touch is absolutely horredous

  5. i think folks know that the PL will be a step up for Edu, but going so far as to say he hasn’t mastered basic skills is excessive.

  6. I know I’m going to get a lot of haters for this but I think the Premier League is way beyond Edu’s level.

The guy hasn’t even mastered basic skills like a decent first touch or trapping the ball

  7. It will be a dream if Edu and Cameron are the starting central defenders for Stoke. Having (what could be) the 2 USMNT starting central defenders playing for the same club in the BPL would be amazing. This could be the perfect move for Maurice Edu.
