Soccer Wednesday: Your Running Commentary

Wednesday's FIFA international fixture date makes for an unusually busy weekday of international soccer around the world, one with some tantalizing matchups setting the table for tonight's USA-Mexico bout at Estadio Azteca.

Powers Germany and Argentina square off in Frankfurt, where Germany will trot out a squad missing some key faces but one that still features Mesut Ozil, Miroslav Klose and Sami Khedira against a full-strength Argentina team that will feature the likes of Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain and Angel di Maria.

Elsewhere, England and Italy meet in a rematch of the Euro 2012 quarterfinals; France clashes with Uruguay; Belgium and the Netherlands clash in a border war featuring two attack-minded sides; and Brazil returns to action against Sweden featuring a number of players who are coming off a disappointing silver medal at the London Olympics.

Hoping for an underdog story? Look no further than Puerto Rico, which welcomes two-time defending European champion and defending World Cup champion Spain to Estadio Juan Ramon Loubriel.

If you will be watching any of Wednesday's games, please feel free to share any thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below. Enjoy the action (TV schedule is after the jump):

  1. I wasn’t solely basing my opinion on one missed PK. Messi has seemed more apprehensive and less sharp in the past six months or so. His age is catching up with him slightly.

  2. The power it took to hit that from 40 yards and have it still rising at only chest height when it entered the goal… that was a missile.

  3. Oh wow that was one of the best long distance strikes I’ve ever seen. Where the heck did that come from?!?!?

    What an incredible goal.

  4. Germany is triple man marking Messi and he’s still getting involved in the offense now… which is probably a good thing because the rest Argentina’s offense is nowhere to be found.

  5. Welp that changes the game. Germany down to 10 men. Divot in the pitch slows down a through ball leaving the keeper hanging and he’s forced to take the forward down. Penalty and a red card.

  6. I will be pissed if this is the case. I can’t imagine why, though. It’s 5 hours until kickoff, so you would think other websites would have something by now.

  7. any news on Clarence Goodson. read some rumors of his bad form at his club. His team is 1 of the biggest in Scandinavia but his club have been crap for over a year. Do you guys think he should leave for a new club like in Holland or Germany?

  8. Wait a second – Spain is playing Puerto Rico (138 in the FIFA rankings)?!? Why don’t they take on a tougher foe, like St. Kitts (113) or Bermuda (120)?
