Shalrie Joseph made himself feel quite at home at Gillette Stadium Wednesday night.

In his return to the place he called home since 2003 until a trade sent him across the country to Chivas USA, Joseph scored two goals to spark a three-goal comeback and help the Goats salvage a 3-3 draw against the Revolution to keep their faint playoff hopes alive. Chivas trail fifth-place Vancouver by nine points but have three games in hand on the Whitecaps.

After Saer Sene scored twice to sandwich a Rauwshan McKenzie own goal in the opening 21 minutes, Joseph went to work against the players who he used to lead as Revolution captain. He headed home a Miller Bolanos corner kick in the 23rd minute and then unleashed a left-footed shot from distance just before halftime to pull Chivas within one. Bolanos cemented the comeback a minute later, finishing off a play in front of the net after Casey Townsend's squared header off a cross from Juan Agudelo on a sequence that started with a throw-in.

The draw was the second match in five days in which the Revs blew a multi-goal lead after leading Columbus 2-0 Saturday night before succumbing to a 4-3 defeat. Matt Reis ensured that the Revs walked away with their first point of the post-Joseph era, stoning Juan Pablo Angel and Juan Agudelo on a second-half sequence and saving Laurent Courtois's effort from the top of the box in stoppage time.

Here are highlights from the match:

  1. Sene, Nguyen, Bengston, Rowe are all upgrades on a team that had huge trouble scoring goals last year. The only significant loss is Joseph, who was a luxury considering he was a DP and this team was not going to be competitive this year anyway.

  2. Sorry, but other than Sene and Nguyen (who dropped into their lap,) the talent level is no better. I think they’ve actually made Soares worse.

  3. Totally agree about the Krafts, but give Heaps some time. He inherited a crap team, installed an entirely new system, and turned over about half the roster. This was always going to be a rough year, but the talent level compared to last year is so much higher. I’d like to see how this team performs next season. If the results are the same, well then yeah, Heaps is probably at fault.

  4. If only the Krafts cared about soccer Jay Heaps would be on the chopping block and Mike “I can’t guard the post in a World Cup” Burns would be long gone.
