Lenhart’s late winner leads Earthquakes to victory over Sounders

While few could've predicted how it would happen, it would be hard for anyone to be surprised by what the San Jose Earthquakes pulled off Saturday night.

In what has become the latest in a series of astonishing late heroics by San Jose, Steven Lenhart scored a 93rd-minute winner to stun the Seattle Sounders and earn the Earthquakes a 2-1 victory at Buck Shaw Stadium.

The goal came just one minute after Fredy Montero had scored what would've been a dramatic stoppage-time equalizer for Seattle, had it not been for Lenhart's eventual winner. San Jose's Simon Dawkins had put his club up in the 71st minute after each team had failed to convert several quality chances over a large part of the match.

Seattle then had even more opportunities of their own to answer Dawkins' opener, and it wasn't until the 92nd minute that San Jose's Sam Cronin failed to clear a loose ball and Montero pounced to put away the equalizer.

The 1-1 scoreline would only last for moments, though, as San Jose somehow found a way to take all three points when Lenhart got on the end of a Shea Salinas corner and delivered the winning goal, which extended San Jose's lead in the race for the MLS Supporters' Shield.

Watch are the match highlights after the jump:

What did you think of the match? Can San Jose keep coming up with late heroics through the end of the season? How will Seattle respond to this kind of a loss in their next game?
