Mid-Day Ticker: PSG bid for Lucas, Revs waive Moreno and more

The race for Lucas Moura is heating up.

According to Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti, French club Paris Saint-Germain have thrown themselves into the mix for the 19-year-old midfielder. Moratti, whose club is keen on signing the midfielder, said PSG has offered Sao Paulo a bid worth an estimated $55.9 million for the Brazilian international, who is considered one of the brightest young prospects in world soccer.

Lucas Moura has been linked with a number of top clubs in Europe in recent weeks, including Manchester United, Chelsea and Inter Milan. He is currently with the Brazilian Olympic team in London that is still fighting for gold.

Here are more stories from Monday:

REVOLUTION, MORENO PART WAYS

Less than six months after joining the team, Jose Moreno was waived by the New England Revolution on Monday. The 30-year-old made seven appearances for New England and scored once this season. His last appearance for the club came on June 16, when he played 45 minutes before suffering an ankle knock.

MODRIC PRICE STILL NOT MET

If Luka Modric is to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer, a higher bid will need to come in. Spurs head coach Andre Villas-Boas said the asking price for Modric has not yet been met by any of the interested parties, and that he expects the Croatian international to return to training with Tottenham in the near future. The 26-year-old Modric has being linked with several teams in recent weeks, including Real Madrid.

FLETCHER TO CONTINUE RECOVERY BY TRAINING WITH SCOTLAND

Darren Fletcher's return to Manchester United appears to be looming, as he is set to train with Scotland's national team in the coming days. Scotland manager Craig Levein said the 28-year-old midfielder would train with his team beginning this weekend as they prepare for a friendly match against Australia on August 15. Fletcher has been out of action for both club and country since last November with a chronic bowel problem.

Where do you see Lucas Moura ending up? Surprised the Revolution parted ways with Moreno? Expecting Fletcher to make an impact with Manchester United this season?

  1. I believe most United fans (at least the intelligent ones) argue that in the case of PSG, City, and Chelsea, the money to spend was “magically” given to them and was not earned. I’m not saying United didn’t benefit from having money, but a lot of their money was earned. They certainly splashed the cash from time to time, but nothing remotely close to the level of City, Chelsea, and PSG in the span of a few years. United never bought three or four players a season for insane amounts of money, and it’s not like other teams in the EPL weren’t spending money either. I think SAF has a right to be angry over agent fees and such, which have arisen due to teams with rich owners gladly paying them. He doesn’t want to be held ransom to sign a player, which he shouldn’t be…

  2. Being a Revs fan myself I agree with a lot of these sentiments, however you clearly haven’t watched many if any at all games this year. We have some fairly talented players and play a somewhat attacking style, it’s just that the whole ridiculous stadium situation prevents us from actually being exciting. Also if you haven’t heard of Benny Feilhaber, you’re not a “common soccer fan”.

  3. Does anyone care about the Revs? Besides Chivas USA the Rev’s need the biggest over haul of any MLS club. Name change is the first priority! New England is and will always be associated with the Patriots, plus the entire name is weak. Boston Rovers or Boston United are two very strong names and they look like a soccer teams name. To some the name isn’t important, but when you are trying to brand yourself, it’s very important and the Rev’s is horrible. Besides Columbus the Rev’s are the only original team that hasn’t rebranded yet. Change your name, colors, get some quality players like the rest of the league has done. At least get someone that the common soccer fan has heard of and finally get a stadium.

  4. Agreed. Am not a fan of any of the big spending teams (save Barca, who produce almost as many players as they purchase). Def poor form (for Man U and their fans alike) to complain about it.

  5. …and I think it’s utterly hilarious to see Sir Alex and his ilk complain about more big fish out-biding him.

People have some diluted history that Man United didn’t do the same for decades.

Sucks when the shoes on the other foot, I guess.

  6. Seems Man U could be outbid by PSG. Days in which Real and Man U could always just offer the most money are over. Chelsea, Man City, PSG are the big boys too now. The times they are a changin’.

  7. I don’t think this saves them any money or cap space but that won’t stop the Krafts are cheap crowd.

They had to pick up the option on his contract by July 1st so Moreno has a guaranteed for this season. With the Imbongo signing and Begnston’s return, Moreno fell off the depth chart. Also he was f***ing useless when he played. Good riddance.
