Mid-Day Ticker: Rogers on Leeds transfer list, Cameron set for Azteca & more

Rogers (Reuters)

By THOMAS FLOYD

It appears Robbie Rogers' brief tenure with Leeds United could be coming to an end.

The U.S. national team midfielder has been placed on the club's transfer list, manager Neil Warnock said. Rogers signed with Leeds as a free agent in December after five years with the Columbus Crew. But he suffered a concussion in his February debut and ended up making just four appearances in the League Championship before an ankle injury ended his campaign.

"You have to look at what you can do," Warnock told the club's website. "We're looking at forward players and it might be that we have to move one or two on."

Here is some more news to keep your Thursday going:

STOKE ASSISTANT SAYS CAMERON WILL PLAY AT AZTECA

Geoff Cameron's move to Stoke City was just finalized Wednesday, but it appears he already has a return trip across the pond scheduled.

Stoke assistant David Kemp said the centerback will be traveling to Mexico City for the U.S. national team's friendly Wednesday against El Tri at Estadio Azteca. It had been unclear whether U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann would choose Cameron for the match while the player is attempting to break in with his new squad.

"It's been frustrating for him not being able to play in the pre-season games," Kemp said to BBC. "And he's got to go back there next week to play for the USA in a game in Mexico. It means more unnecessary travelling, and we're still not sure how quickly we can get him playing. But he's just keen to get started."

CANADA WOMEN TOP FRANCE FOR BRONZE MEDAL

Three days after suffering a gut-wrenching 4-3 extra-time loss to the U.S. in the Olympic semifinals, the Canada women's national team rallied to defeat France 1-0 on Thursday to claim the bronze medal.

Midfielder Diana Matheson scored in stoppage time to give Canada the win in Coventry. The players now will travel about 100 miles to Wembley Stadium to receive their medals after the U.S.-Japan final later today.

TOTTENHAM TURNS TO CESAR IN GOALKEEPER SEARCH

Tottenham manager Andres Villas-Boas has reportedly held talks with the agent of Inter Milan goalkeeper Julio Cesar in hopes of acquiring the Brazilian veteran.

Villas-Boas seems to be looking for an upgrade over 41-year-old incumbent Brad Friedel. He also reportedly is targeting Lyon's Hugo Lloris, but the Frenchman may be too expensive.

Are you disappointed to see Leeds place Rogers on the transfer list so quickly? Do you think the U.S. should call up Cameron while he's trying adjust to a new club? Are the Canada women worthy recipients of the bronze medal? Does Tottenham need an upgrade over Friedel?

  1. I never said anything negative about Gooch. All i mentioned was that I agree Kahn does look like an ape.

You and others are so quick to judge people as racists when you have no idea but have double standards when it comes to others like I referred to in the posts.

Chill out and enjoy the comedic value of some things in life; not everything is black or white.

If you are laughing after watching this, are you a racist or just enjoying for its comedic value ?

  2. Those are their nicknames aren’t they. They sure don’t mind. Mohammed is of Turkish origins. Primitivo gave himself the nickname. All comedians all over the world say racist jokes. Is it OK to throw a bandanna at a black player? Maybe they are hungry. Right?

  3. I didn’t make any reference to Gooch. Only Kahn. Gooch didn’t give himself a nickname.

So it is ok to call Maradiaga a cave man / Primitivo? That was the point that sometimes people are referred to by physical attributes and racism was never intended. What about Chino Recoba or Turco Mohammed?

Everyone who lives in the US knows the double standard. Why does NAACP allow Katt Williams to make a living telling racist jokes? Where is Rev Sharpton and Jesse Jackson? Prob in the audience laughing at his jokes.

  4. Too bad for Rogers. Never really got to show anything, but on the other hand Rogers really doesn’t have an intelligent soccer brain. Great athlete just not a very good soccer player. Doesn’t surprise he is tramsger listed. He wasn’t even the best player for Columbus.

  5. It was some guy from Stoke who said Cameron was going to Mexico not the USSF.

JK has not yet confirmed it so I would wait a day or two.

  6. With your logic, try going into a black Hood and yelling the word ni$$&r out loud. Unless ur black people will b offended. Also Primitivo from Honduras doesn’t mind his nickname
I wonder if gooch wants to be nicknamed a gorilla

  7. If you’re hanging out on this web site, the man on the Clapham Omnibus can assume you follow international soccer, even if you are 12. Sadly, that’s enough to figure out the connotations of this sort of statement. If she were truly curious she would have Googled it.

  8. It’s not even close to being racism. How do you know the person who said it is not even black? The problem is that most people do not even know what racism is which is sad. What the poster said was unnecessary. I have a co-worker who is black who 6 months ago said, “You mean that guy who looks like an gorilla.” Yeah, if he were white he would be racist, PSS. Looks have nothing to do with race. It’s a fact not an opinion. Can a person who calls someone a gorilla be a racist? Yes. But we do not know the poster personally. You can easily call a Caucasian person a gorilla because he is huge or muscular. People should not judge without knowing the intent or meaning, which cannot be interpreted via email.

  10. I get that, I really do. And I normally would agree 100%. But I think, in the long term, it might benefit the USMNT more if he sits this one out and focuses on Stoke. It’s just a friendly, even if it is Mexico.

I will retract that it is a “terrible” idea, but I still think he should stay. But that’s just me.

  11. mason – i never said that *i* don’t get the connotation; but i don’t know ashanti’s background or age–maybe she’s 12, and hasn’t been exposed to that kind of crap? whatever the case, i certainly wouldn’t assume she was racist, just because she’s unaware of the connotation.

old school – i prefer the term ‘innocent’, not ‘naive’. I certainly hope there are still kids out there who have never heard black people called monkeys. sure, they’ll find out soon enough, but it’s just nice to think about, right?.
