Montero nets hat trick for Seattle in 6-2 rout over Chivas USA

Montero

By BRYAN ROBISON

Whether it is off the bench or after being introduced in the starting lineup, Fredy Montero is having quite an impact during August. That continued on Saturday night, as the Colombian netted his first career hat trick at Home Depot Center against Chivas USA. He also added an assist on the night, in a game never in doubt, as Seattle dominated Chivas to the tune of a 6-2 victory.

The win gives Seattle their fourth in five matches, scoring three or more goals in three of those wins. The three points tonight evens them up with Real Salt Lake for second place in the Western Conference, with two games in hand.

Seattle did not take long to take control of the match, opening up the scoring ten minutes in with a Brad Evans goal. Then Montero took over, as he scored the next two for the Sounders. While Montero has Mauro Rosales to thank, as the Argentine assisted on all three of his goals, Montero impressed with each one, befuddling Dan Kennedy all night.

With three more goals tonight, Montero brings his season total to eleven. He now has at least one goal in his last four matches, and seven in his last six matches total.

Not wanting to be left out of the spotlight, Samuel Ochoa also joined in on the fun for Seattle, adding his own tally in the second half.

There were bright spots for Chivas on the night, as Juan Agudelo converted a 38th minute penalty kick, which brought the score to 3-1. While it did not do much in regards to threatening Seattle, it was Agudelo's second goal on the season, and first since May 26th, his first game as a Goat.

Up next for Seattle is a return to CONCACAF Champions League play, as they will travel to Trinidad to take on Caledonia AIA. They return to MLS play next Sunday against FC Dallas in Frisco, Texas. Chivas USA will begin a three-game road trip on Wednesday night, traveling to Gillette Stadium to take on the New England Revolution.

Here are the match highlights:

Can Seattle catch up to San Jose in the Supporters' Shield standings? Will this be what Juan Agudelo needs to turn his season around?

  1. Agree, agree, agree. I can’t stand the homerism of the SJ broadcasters. While many local broadcasters carry their allegiance on their sleeve, the SJ crew seems incapable of uttering any balancerd view and they provide very little insight. I understand they need to promote the Quakes in a crowded and fickle Bay Area sports market but they journey beyond the pale.

  2. It’s been widely discussed here in Los Angeles. It’s actually AEG’s nuclear option if no NFL team signs on board. They WILL build the stadium no matter what. Even if only the Galaxy play there.

AEG has no problem booking venues for concerts, events, etc.

  3. Seattle is 50/50 to move up to 5th or 6th in the power rankings. They still have the least losses in MLS and second best GD, but if LA stays at .500 then obviously LA should stay ahead of them.

  4. Out of interest, do you have any actual evidence that LAG might move to Farmer’s Field?

I highly doubt that they would leave a 10 year old, 29k seat stadium with grass for an NFL stadium with turf that they couldn’t sell out.

  5. It’s hard to say which of the following they need most, but:

    1. New ownership – The club is obviously not a priority for the owners compared to Chivas de Guadalajara
    2. Rebranding – Americans don’t want to support a knockoff of a Liga MX team
    3. Own stadium – Sharing HDC with the most popular MLS team can’t help. Look at the Lakers/Clippers… even with CP3 and Blake Griffin, it’s not like the Clippers fan base has exponentially grown.

  6. Why is there a Chivas USA team? They hurt the credibility of MLS. The brand, team, and organization is the most un-authentic brand of any team in MLS. They have no identity, nor a fan base that cares about them. Poor marketing, poor technical staff, and just a horrible idea to begin with.

  7. The Chivas USA franchise needs to fold.

Can someone please explain to me how their existence benefits MLS and American soccer?

Nobody goes to their games. The team is Mexican in spirit, and no American wants to play for them. And 99% of their minuscule fan-base are Mexican national team supporters.

Did I mention the team sucks a$$?

  8. Perhaps San Jose announcers can take a cue from the Seattle announcers and not be so biased, and give credit and criticism to both teams equally. SJ is horribly pathetic in that regard…

  9. Mario Martinez made his debut as well. I don’t think it was enough to say how much of an impact he’ll make, but I do know that he was ranging all over the place to get the ball and his teammates already respect him enough to give it to them.

  10. incredibly talented team. a healthy zakuani (that would have been improving the past year during his injury) it may be the most talented mid/FW combos the MLS has ever seen
