Olympic Soccer: USA vs. Canada (Match Day Commentary)

The U.S. Women's National Team is one step away from a Gold Medal game against Japan in a rematch of last year's World Cup Final, but to get to that game the Americans will have to beat a familiar foe in Canada (2:45pm, NBC Sports).

The Americans are a perfect 4-0 in Olympic play, having posted three straight shutouts. They play a Canada side that comes in riding high after beating Great Britain in the quarterfinals.

The USA hasn't lost to Canada since 2001, but Canada gave the Americans a run for their money when the teams played on June 30th. The USA won that game, 2-1, and today's match should also be a close one.

SBI will be providing live commentary on today's match so please feel free to follow along here. As always, you are welcome to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

Enjoy the action (Commentary is after the jump):

  1. I’m so glad that Team USA won this game. This game did prove to be similar to the June 30th game in that it was so close and went into overtime. I can’t wait to see Team USA beat Japan. I’ve been watching Olympic events on my phone thanks to the suggestion of a Dish coworker. I like watching during my commute, using the Dish Remote Access app. With this app I’m able to watch live and recorded shows and also set up DVR timers all on my phone. I love the convenience and I never miss my favorite events!

  2. Could give it plus one million, it still doesn’t make you right. Wambach gets mugged continually, but doesn’t flop, and is physically bigger so is called for the exact same thing she suffers w/o intervention – always.

  3. THAT was a game! It had everything, absolutely everything. That has to be high up there as one of the games of the year – men and women.

Congrats, USWNT, on making it through. Now how about we go and wake up the D, which had to have been still sleeping in the Olympic Village, right? Whew!

  4. What a game! My black a$$ almost cried when Morgan hit that snap header with 30 seconds left in overtime. Just awesome! My only worry is that this game took so much heart, effort, and stress that they may be too weak to handle Japan in a couple of days.

  5. Where was our EFENSE? I have the game recorded, since I had to work for the man today, but the scoreline is kinda troubling, even if we got the W.

  7. Forget bravery, that’s awful coaching. She completely hyperextended her leg, reverse parabola style. Why would you ever listen to her and let her back on?!

  8. It is amazing to me that the commentators have now started a running tally for how many fouls Trancredi has committed without an ejection. Its like the ref isn’t paying attention.

  9. How is Trancredi still on the pitch?!?

She has been called for SEVEN fouls already. Those are just what she’s been called for.

  10. I know the six second call is odd, but I can’t even remember the last time I’ve seen an indirect free kick.

It seems like every one of those guardian you be the ref strips gives an indirect free kick, and I never see them.

  11. If having seen one game would be enough for you to change your mind about a player, perhaps you have insufficient knowledge to be voicing an opinion in the first place. Anyone who watches the WNT regularly knows that Heath is a very good player.

  12. funny, I’d argue, with Tancredi hacking down everything that moves and generally trying to agitate, the exact opposite.

  13. It was a marginal call, could’ve gone either way. Personally, I would say no penalty, but you can’t complain either way. Hardly “disgusting.”

  14. What are you talking about?

The defender raised her arm into an unnatural position the air and the ball struck it. Clear cut penalty.

  15. Are you kidding me?!?!

Second unmarked header for the greatest active goal scorer in women’s soccer? It’s like leaving Messi unmarked. This is HORRID defending.

  16. Rapinoe’s last 10 minutes were certainly strong so I’m not sure why Avi thinks she’s not playing well. Looks better than in the last game. Just made some a nice steal, played the ball well from the back, worked a good triangle, etc. Looks fine to me.

  17. Are there any streaming sites other than any official NBC/Olympics sites (blocked for duration of olympics) or 1st row (just got blocked a month ago)?

    Thx

  18. I missed the quarterfinal, on vaca. So that may have changed my opinion. I just hadn’t seen her beat her man until about 5 minutes ago

  19. She is strong technically by women’s soccer standards and is a good passer. She provided an assist on the second goal in our first elimination game (against New Zeland).
